Getting Around Porz am Rhein

Porz is a borough of Cologne sitting on the east bank of the Rhine, in the city's south-east. It is the largest borough in Cologne by area and is made up of a number of distinct city parts, so getting around means thinking in terms of connections between those parts and, just as importantly, connections across the river into central Cologne. The good news for visitors is that Porz is well served by public transport, with rail, light rail and bus options all in play.

Rail and Light Rail

Porz is served by a number of railway stations, which makes it straightforward to move between the borough's different districts and to reach the rest of Cologne. Regional train stations in the area include Porz (Rhein), Porz-Wahn, Köln-Steinstraße and Köln-Airport Business Park.

For local movement within Porz itself, the light rail — the Stadtbahn — is the key mode. Porz proper has two light-rail stations on Stadtbahn line 7: Porz Steinstraße to the north and Porz Markt in the town centre. Line 7 also gives you a direct link into central Cologne; from Porz Markt you can ride through to Neumarkt, a central interchange in the city.

Regional trains provide the fastest link toward the city centre. From Köln Porz Bf, regional services run to Köln Hbf, Cologne's main station, with departures at frequent intervals through the day and a journey time well under half an hour. If your destination is the cathedral, the old town or the main shopping streets, this is usually the simplest option.

Buses and Other Public Transport

Buses fill in the gaps between the rail and light-rail stations and the residential and commercial parts of the borough. A useful direct service runs from Köln Porz Markt to Köln Deutz Severinsbrücke, taking roughly twenty minutes and running daily at frequent intervals. The main operator is KVB, the Cologne public transport company, with some additional DB Bus services on the same corridor.

Porz Markt is the natural boarding point for most of these services, since it sits in the town centre and is also a light-rail stop — handy if you need to switch between tram and bus.

There is also a ferry across the Rhine, operated by Köln-Düsseldorfer (KD), linking Porz (Rhein) with the Cologne side. It runs only a couple of times a day, so treat it as a scenic extra rather than a dependable commuting option.

Tickets and Fares

Porz sits within the Cologne fare network, so a single ticket or day pass bought for the city generally covers the tram, bus and regional train services described here. Buy tickets from machines at the stations, from the driver on buses where permitted, or through the operator's app. Because fares and journey times vary by route and are set by the operators rather than fixed in advance, it is worth checking the current price for your specific trip before you travel rather than relying on any figure you may have seen quoted elsewhere.

Taxis and Ride-Hailing

Taxis are available and are the quickest door-to-door option for short hops, particularly late at night when you do not want to wait for a connection. A taxi between Porz and central Cologne takes only a matter of minutes by road and is a reasonable choice if you are travelling in a group or carrying luggage. Ride-hailing apps work in the Cologne area as well, though availability in the outer boroughs can be thinner than in the centre, so it is worth requesting a car a little ahead of time.

Walking

Walking works well within individual parts of Porz — around Porz Markt and the surrounding town centre, for example, where shops, services and the light-rail stop are close together. Between the borough's separate districts, however, distances are considerable, and Porz is a large, spread-out borough overall. For anything beyond a single neighbourhood, plan on using the tram, train or bus rather than walking.

Getting In from the Airport

Cologne-Bonn airport lies within Porz, which makes the borough unusually convenient for arrivals. The airport has its own rail station, Köln-Airport Business Park, served by regional trains, so you can step off a flight and onto a train toward central Cologne without first crossing the city. From the airport you can also connect into the local tram and bus network to reach other parts of Porz. If your final destination is in the borough itself rather than the city centre, a taxi from the airport is short and simple.

By Car

For drivers, Porz is reached from the Cologne Beltway via the A59 and A559 motorways. The borough is also crossed by major Rhine bridges, including the Südbrücke and the A4 Rodenkirchener Autobahnbrücke, which connect it to the opposite bank. Driving is convenient if you are heading outside Cologne, but for trips into the city centre the train is usually less hassle than finding parking.
