Getting Around Stuttgart
Stuttgart has a compact city centre where most major attractions lie within walking distance of each other. Nearly all visitors arrive at the main train station (Hauptbahnhof). From there, a pedestrian shopping street called Königstraße leads through the heart of the city towards the Schlossplatz and other central areas. Other main sights, including museums and cultural venues, are conveniently located nearby.
Walking
The city centre is highly walkable, with major destinations positioned close together. The pedestrian-friendly layout makes exploring on foot an efficient and enjoyable way to experience Stuttgart's main attractions.
Public Transport Network
Stuttgart operates an integrated public transport network comprising S-Bahn (commuter rail), Stadtbahn (tram/metro system), and buses. All these services are connected and can be accessed using the same ticketing system.
S-Bahn (Commuter Rail)
The S-Bahn provides regional and local rail connections throughout Stuttgart and its surrounding areas. Tickets can be purchased at vending machines or through the VVS app. Different fare zones apply depending on your destination; tickets are valid across all connected zones.
Stadtbahn (Tram and Metro)
The Stadtbahn system includes both tram and metro lines serving the city. The yellow and black vehicles of the Stadtbahn are specially designed to navigate Stuttgart's steep hills, with all axles driven to manage inclines of up to 8.5%—reported as Europe's steepest regular-lane friction track used in local public transport. Like the S-Bahn, tickets for the Stadtbahn can be purchased at vending machines or through the VVS app.
Buses
Bus lines operate throughout Stuttgart, including regional services to nearby towns and night buses for evening travel. Buses connect major transport hubs and are integrated into the same ticketing system as rail services.
Getting from the Airport to the City
Stuttgart Airport lies on the southern outskirts of the city and is well connected by public transport.
S-Bahn
The S-Bahn lines S2 and S3 provide direct service from the airport to Stuttgart's city centre, taking approximately 27 minutes. Tickets cost €3.70 and can be purchased at vending machines located below the airport and above the platform. Tickets must be validated at orange boxes on the platform before boarding. The VVS app also allows ticket purchase. Note that the airport is located in zone 2, and your ticket is valid across all public transport zones.
Stadtbahn
The U6 Stadtbahn line connects the airport to Stuttgart Hauptbahnhof in approximately 32 minutes. The U-Bahn stop is located outside the airport building next to the Mövenpick hotel. Look for the symbol with a white U on a blue background to locate the stop.
Bus
Several bus lines serve the airport, with stops at the Stuttgart bus terminal (SAB) located across the street from the airport building. Regional services connect to towns such as Tübingen and Reutlingen. Night bus N8 operates between Schlossplatz and the airport for early morning departures.
Taxi and Car Rental
Taxis are available at the airport; expect to pay around €30 to reach the city centre. Car rental companies operate in the airport basement, and car-sharing services operate from the car park. However, given Stuttgart's traffic congestion and parking challenges in the city centre, renting a car is generally not recommended for visiting the city itself.
Alternative: Train from Frankfurt Airport
Many visitors consider flying to Frankfurt Airport instead of Stuttgart, as high-speed ICE trains connect Frankfurt to Stuttgart's main railway station in just one hour. This option can be competitive in terms of cost and convenience, landing you directly in the city centre.
Taxis and Ride-Hailing
Taxis operate throughout Stuttgart and can be summoned by phone. Car-sharing services such as ShareNow (Car2Go) also operate in the city, though using private vehicles is not advisable for navigating the city centre given traffic congestion and parking difficulties.
