Getting Around Heilbronn

Heilbronn sits in the Neckar valley in northern Baden-Württemberg, and its compact, largely flat centre makes it an easy city to explore on foot. For longer hops and trips into the surrounding region, a mix of trams, buses and trains covers the city and its districts, with a single regional transport network tying the tickets together.

On Foot

Walking is the simplest way to get around central Heilbronn. The city centre is compact and pedestrian-friendly, with pedestrian areas, cafés, restaurants and shops all within comfortable walking distance of one another. The flat terrain of the Neckar valley means you rarely have to contend with steep climbs while exploring the core of the city.

Trams and the Stadtbahn

Heilbronn's rail-based local transport comes in the form of city tram lines, known locally as the Stadtbahn. These run through the city and its districts and form the backbone of the urban network. They are operated by Stadtwerke Heilbronn GmbH, the city's municipal utility company.

Buses and Night Services

A dense network of city bus lines fills in the areas the trams don't reach, serving both the centre and the outlying districts. Alongside the daytime services, night bus lines keep the city connected after the regular services wind down, which is useful if you're out late. Regional bus lines extend the reach beyond the city boundary, linking Heilbronn with the surrounding towns and countryside.

Regional Trains

Heilbronn has direct rail connections to Stuttgart, Heidelberg, Mannheim and Würzburg, making it straightforward to arrive by train or to use the city as a base for day trips. S-Bahn services also connect Heilbronn with Bretten, Karlsruhe and Schwäbisch Hall. Trains, city trams and regional buses all work together to connect the city with its wider region.

Tickets and Passes

The good news for visitors is that you don't need to juggle separate tickets for each operator. Tickets for Heilbronn and the surrounding area are sold through the Heilbronner·Hohenloher·Haller Nahverkehr (HNV) network, which simplifies regional travel and lets you buy a single ticket that covers your journey across the different modes. If you're staying longer, it's worth checking what day or multi-day options the HNV offers for the zones you plan to travel in.

Taxis and Ride-Hailing

Taxis are available in Heilbronn, and ride-hailing apps can be used as an alternative to hailing a cab on the street. For short trips within the compact centre, though, walking or the tram will usually be quicker and cheaper than either.

Cycling

Heilbronn is well suited to cycling. The terrain is flat thanks to the city's position in the Neckar valley, so riders of all proficiency levels can get around comfortably, and there is an extensive network of signposted cycling routes in and around the city. Investment in cycling infrastructure is ongoing, so conditions for cyclists continue to improve.

Getting There from the Airport

Stuttgart Airport is the closest airport with international connections, while Frankfurt Airport offers a greater number of connections overall. From either, the practical way into Heilbronn is by rail: Stuttgart Airport has its own station on the regional rail network, and Frankfurt Airport is likewise connected to the German rail system, so you can travel by train to Heilbronn with a change en route. Because Heilbronn has direct rail links to Stuttgart, Heidelberg, Mannheim and Würzburg, the final leg into the city is straightforward once you're on the main line.

By Car

If you're driving, two major motorways meet near Heilbronn at the Weinsberger Kreuz: the A 6, running from Mannheim to Nürnberg, and the A 81, running from Stuttgart to Würzburg. This makes the city easy to reach by road from several directions, though once you're in the centre, parking and one-way streets make the tram and your own two feet the more relaxing options.
