Getting Around Pinar del Río

Pinar del Río is the capital of Cuba's westernmost province and a working tobacco town rather than a resort, so getting around is straightforward and low-key. The practical picture is simple: the centre is small enough to cover on foot, and for anything beyond it you rely on buses, shared colectivos and taxis. Note that the city's own airport is abandoned and the nearby La Coloma Airport has no scheduled flights, so almost every visitor arrives overland from Havana or from Viñales.

On Foot

The city centre is easily walkable on foot, and this is the most practical way to cover the main streets, the central squares and the everyday life of the town. Distances within the core are short, so unless you are heading out to the bus or train station or to one of the surrounding villages, you rarely need wheels.

Rail

Pinar del Río has a railway station on the line to Havana. The service is slow and infrequent: a slow overnight train runs from Havana on alternate days, arriving very early in the morning, and the return train to Havana runs during the day. Because departures are not daily, check the schedule locally before you plan a rail trip, and treat the train as a scenic, unhurried option rather than a quick connection. There is no metro or tram network in the city.

Buses and Coaches

The city has a bus terminal, and this is where long-distance coach services stop. Viazul runs twice-daily buses between Havana and Viñales that call at Pinar del Río's bus terminal; the trip from Havana takes about three hours. There is also one morning bus from Viñales to Trinidad. Schedules change, so download the current timetable from the Viazul website in advance and confirm times at the terminal when you arrive.

Colectivos

Shared colectivos are a common and inexpensive way to move between towns. They typically wait in Havana at the Viazul bus stop, and a seat to Pinar del Río, Viñales or Las Terrazas is a flat per-person fare. For the return trip, look for taxi touts near the bus terminal in Pinar del Río. Locally, colectivos to Viñales leave from the junction near the Provincial Hospital; the fare is low, though some bargaining may be required. Agree the price before you get in.

Taxis

Taxis are available for longer journeys and for reaching the stations with luggage. A taxi from Havana to Pinar del Río is a considerably more expensive option than the bus or a colectivo, but it is direct and door-to-door. Within the city, taxis are best arranged through your casa particular or hotel, since there is no app-based ride-hailing culture to rely on here.

Arriving from the Airport

Pinar del Río Airport is abandoned, and La Coloma Airport has no scheduled flights, so you cannot fly into the city. The practical arrival points are Havana and Viñales, both connected by Viazul coach and by shared colectivos, with taxis available as a faster, pricier alternative. The city is also served by the Carretera Central highway and the A4 motorway, which is how road traffic reaches it.
