Getting Around Facatativa

Facatativa, Colombia

Orientation

Facatativá sits in the Cundinamarca Department, roughly 31 km northwest of Bogotá, at an elevation of about 2,586 metres above sea level. That altitude and its position at the edge of the Bogotá savanna shape how you get around: the historic centre is compact and walkable, while longer trips in and out of town run through the bus terminal or along the main arteries.

Getting Around the City

Facatativá has no metro, tram or light rail network, and no urban rail service for visitors to use. Getting around town relies on walking, public buses, taxis and ride-hailing. The city's most important building, the cathedral, sits next to the Simón Bolívar Plaza in the downtown area, and several of the parks and attractions visitors tend to seek out — the Main Park, Children's Park, Simón Bolívar Park and Santa Rita Park — cluster in and around the centre, which makes the core easy to cover on foot.

Buses and Public Transport

Public buses are the main form of collective transport in Facatativá. Buses run along the principal streets, including Carrera 1 and Calle 5, and these same routes are the ones to flag down if you are heading to the bus terminal. Fares are paid on board; there is no citywide travel card or pass described for Facatativá, so plan on paying per trip in cash.

For anything beyond the city, the Terminal de Facatativá is the hub. It is located at Carrera 1 # 5-74 and operates every day from 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. (phone +57 314 612 3233). From here you can reach other municipalities in Cundinamarca and destinations across Colombia. Operators serving the terminal include Rápido Ochoa, Expreso Brasilia and Auto Faca. Long-distance examples include services to Medellín, Cartagena and Girardot, as well as incoming routes from cities such as Barrancabermeja and Sincelejo.

Taxis and Ride-Hailing

Taxis are a straightforward option for reaching the bus terminal — the terminal's own guidance is that you can arrive by taxi from anywhere in the city, or by any public bus travelling along Carrera 1 or Calle 5. For general point-to-point trips around Facatativá, taxis and ride-hailing apps are the practical choice when you do not want to wait for a bus or walk, particularly for early departures or late arrivals at the terminal.

Walkability

The downtown area is the most walkable part of Facatativá. The cathedral is contiguous to the Simón Bolívar Plaza, and the surrounding parks and central streets form a compact cluster that suits strolling. Several of the attractions near the terminal are also reachable on foot from the centre, including the Piedras del Tunjo Archaeological Park with its rock formations and ancient pictographs, the colonial-era Casa Histórica Caseteja Buenos Aires, the KYQA MHUYSQA theme park devoted to Muisca indigenous culture, and the Main Park, Children's Park, Simón Bolívar Park and Santa Rita Park. Outside the centre, distances stretch out and you will want a bus or taxi.

Getting from the Airport into the City

The reference material does not describe an airport serving Facatativá or a direct airport-to-city transfer. In practice, most visitors arrive via Bogotá, about 31 km to the southeast, and continue to Facatativá by road. The reliable option is a long-distance or intercity bus into the Terminal de Facatativá at Carrera 1 # 5-74, which is open daily from 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. From the terminal, continue into the centre by taxi or by any public bus running along Carrera 1 or Calle 5.
