Getting Around Popayán
Popayán is a small city, and its historic centre is fairly compact, which makes it easy to explore on foot. The colonial core, known as the "white city" for the colour of its buildings, is where most visitors spend their time, and walking is the most practical way to see it.
Walking
The historical centre is fairly compact and best explored on foot. Because the city is small, you can also walk between the bus station and the centre in about 10–15 minutes. Cobblestone streets in the old town were almost all paved back in 1937, though some projects have sought to recover the old city's original look, so expect a mix of surfaces underfoot. Caldas Park, which dates back to the city's founding, has been the subject of proposals to expand the pedestrian zone around it, making the heart of town even friendlier to walkers.
Rail, Metro and Tram
Popayán has no rail, metro or tram network. Getting around the city and reaching it from elsewhere is done by road or by air.
Buses and Public Transport
Long-distance buses are the main way travellers reach Popayán overland, and numerous bus companies serve the city. Expreso Bolivariano is described as one of the most reliable operators, while Expreso Puerto Tejada and Expreso Palmira are best avoided. There are daily buses from the border town of Ipiales, and services also connect Popayán with Cali, Armenia, Medellín, San Agustín, Tierradentro and Pasto. Many buses from Ipiales leave in the early morning, and daytime travel is preferable on that route.
Be aware that there is significant guerrilla activity in the countryside near Popayán, and travelling by land can be risky during periods of disturbance if you are not a local. The nearest large city is Cali, to the north in the Valle del Cauca Department.
Taxis and Ride-Hailing
Taxis are plentiful in Popayán and are a convenient option for short trips, including getting to the bus terminal, which costs around COP$3,000. For longer journeys by road, a car ride to Cali takes roughly 100 minutes.
Getting from the Airport into the City
Popayán can be reached by air, though the airport does not have heavy traffic. There are about four daily flights between Bogotá and Popayán in each direction, and the airport is open between 6AM and 6PM. There are no flights between Cali and Popayán. As an alternative, the airport in the neighbouring city of Cali serves many domestic and international destinations and is about a 100-minute car ride away.
Practical Tips
- Base yourself in or near the historic centre — it is compact and best seen on foot.
- Allow 10–15 minutes to walk between the bus station and the centre.
- Keep taxi fare to the bus terminal in mind: around COP$3,000.
- Book overland travel with a reliable operator such as Expreso Bolivariano, and check local conditions before travelling by land, given guerrilla activity in the surrounding countryside.
- If you fly in, note the airport's limited hours (6AM–6PM) and the absence of Cali–Popayán flights; Cali's larger airport is roughly a 100-minute drive away.
