Understanding Yangcheng
"Yangcheng" is a historical name for Guangzhou, the major city in southern China's Guangdong Province. Visitors heading to Yangcheng are, in practice, heading to Guangzhou, and the city's public transport network is one of the most developed in the country. The sections below cover the main ways to get around, how to pay, and how to reach the city from its airport.
How Tourists Move Around the City
Guangzhou's public transport is extensive and well integrated, so most visitors can rely on it for the whole trip. The main modes are:
- Metro and urban rail — the backbone of the network, covering the city centre and many outer districts.
- Trams and the APM line — smaller-scale rail services that complement the metro.
- Buses and trolleybuses — a dense surface network reaching places the metro does not.
- Water buses (ferries) — cross-river services that are also a pleasant way to see the city.
- Taxis and ride-hailing — convenient for door-to-door trips and late nights.
Because these modes share a common electronic payment system, you generally do not need separate tickets for each one.
Rail, Metro and Tram Network
The metro is the fastest and most predictable way to cross the city, and it connects to the wider urban rail system, including the Guangfo Line linking Guangzhou and Foshan. Trams and the APM Line are part of the same fare and payment ecosystem as the metro, so a single card or ride code covers them.
For visitors, the practical points are:
- Buy or top up a Yangchengtong card (see below) or use the ride code on your phone to enter and exit stations.
- Fares are paid per journey, and the same card works across metro, tram, APM Line, Guangfo Line and coded bus routes.
- Customer service centres at major metro stations can help with card issuance, refunds, faulty cards and enquiries.
Buses and Other Public Transport
Buses and trolleybuses fill in the gaps between metro lines and serve districts where rail does not reach. Coded bus routes under the Municipal Transport Bureau, plus routes managed by the Huadu, Panyu, Nansha, Conghua and Zengcheng districts, are covered by the Yangchengtong discount scheme. Community shuttle and customised bus services are excluded from those discounts.
Water buses, operated under the Municipal Port Authority, run cross-river ferry routes and accept the same payment card. They are a practical option for crossing the river and a scenic one as well.
Paying for Public Transport: Yangchengtong
Yangchengtong is Guangzhou's public transport electronic payment system — an electronic wallet issued by Guangzhou Yangchengtong Co., Ltd. It covers buses, metro and water buses, and is interoperable with the Lingnan Tong Card. It can also be used in cities across Guangdong Province and in cities connected to the National Public Transport Card (China T-union) network.
How to get and use a card:
- Cards are issued at offline service outlets at metro stations and surface stops, which also handle deposit refunds, faulty cards and enquiries.
- Standard Cards are the usual choice for visitors. A Monthly Pass Card function has been discontinued and now works the same as a Standard Card.
- Other card types include Corporate, Co-branded, Membership, Student, Senior Citizen, Commemorative, Special-shaped and Blood Donor Privilege cards. Student Cards give a 50% discount to registered students at Guangzhou ordinary primary and secondary schools and secondary vocational schools. Senior Citizen Cards give 50% off for ages 60–65 and free travel for 65 and over.
- Online top-up via e-CNY (Digital Renminbi) is available.
- The Ride Code can be integrated with the Health Code through the Sui Kang Life platform or the Yangchengtong Ride Code Mini Program.
Fare discounts: Under the Guangzhou Public Transport Fare Discount Adjustment Scheme, within a calendar month, cumulative actual fare spend on Guangzhou Metro and buses above ¥80 but under ¥200 gets 20% off, and the portion above ¥200 gets 50% off. This covers coded bus routes under the Municipal Transport Bureau and routes managed by the Huadu, Panyu, Nansha, Conghua and Zengcheng districts (excluding community shuttle and customised bus services), plus metro, tram, APM Line, Guangfo Line and Line 7 West Extension within Guangzhou, and coded water bus routes under the Municipal Port Authority.
Customer service centres are located at major metro stations and surface stops, including Donghuadong, Yuzhu, Guangzhou East Railway Station, Huadiwan, Hanxi Changlong, Renmin North, Gongyuanqian, Tiyuxi, Kecun, Baiyun Cultural Square, Zoo, Chebei South, Jiahewanggang, Shayuan, Lijiao, Botanical Garden and Ezhangtan. Opening hours are generally Monday to Friday 9:00–19:00 and Saturday 10:00–16:00, with some locations also open Sunday 10:00–16:00; Renmin North, Gongyuanqian, Tiyuxi and Kecun are open Saturday and Sunday 10:00–16:00.
Taxis and Ride-Hailing
Taxis and ride-hailing apps are widely used in Guangzhou and are a good option for door-to-door trips, for reaching places off the rail network, and for late-night travel. They are not covered by the Yangchengtong discount scheme, so you pay the metered or app-quoted fare directly. For visitors unfamiliar with the city, ride-hailing is often easier because you can enter your destination in the app rather than explain it to a driver.
Walkability
Central Guangzhou is generally walkable, with wide pavements and pedestrian areas around major commercial and cultural districts. However, the city is large and spread out, so walking is best combined with the metro or bus for longer hops. The metro network is dense enough in the centre that many trips become a short walk at each end plus a train ride in between.
Getting from the Airport into the City
Guangzhou's main airport is served by the metro, which is the most straightforward way into the city for most visitors. The metro connects the airport to the urban rail network, and the same Yangchengtong card or ride code you use elsewhere works here too. Taxis and ride-hailing are also available at the airport for direct trips to your accommodation. Because the metro, buses and water buses all share the Yangchengtong payment system, you can buy or top up a card on arrival and use it for the rest of your stay.
Practical Tips for Visitors
- Get a Yangchengtong Standard Card early — it works on metro, tram, APM Line, Guangfo Line, coded buses and water buses.
- Use the ride code on your phone if you prefer not to carry a card; it can be integrated with the Health Code.
- Keep an eye on your monthly spend: once you pass ¥80, discounts kick in automatically on eligible services.
- Visit a customer service centre at a major metro station if you need help with a card, a refund or an enquiry.
- Use taxis or ride-hailing for late nights and destinations away from rail lines.
- If you are continuing to other parts of Guangdong or to China T-union network cities, your Yangchengtong card may work there as well.
