Getting Around Nanchuan

Nanchuan is a district of Chongqing in southwest China, bordering Guizhou province to the south. It is a compact city whose sights — most famously Jinfo Mountain and the Shanwangping Karst National Ecological Park — sit outside the built-up core, so a visitor's transport plan usually combines city buses for local movement with trains or long-distance buses for the trip in from central Chongqing.

Arriving by Train

Nanchuan North Railway Station (南川北站) on Beigu Road (北固路) is Nanchuan's only railway station. Trains to Nanchuan from central Chongqing depart from Chongqing East Railway Station, making rail a straightforward option if you are starting your journey in the city. The station is served by bus nos. 108 and 111, so you can connect to the local bus network on arrival without arranging a separate transfer. The district is also linked by the Nanchuan–Fuling Railway.

Arriving by Long-Distance Bus

Buses to Nanchuan depart from multiple bus stations in central Chongqing, including the airport bus station — useful if you are flying in and want to head straight to Nanchuan rather than into the city first. Once in Nanchuan, two main bus stations serve the district:

Both stations are useful orientation points: the bus numbers listed above also tell you which local routes will bring you to or from the central station.

Buses and Local Public Transport

Local buses are the main way to move around Nanchuan itself. Numbered routes connect the railway station and the bus stations with the rest of the city — for example, nos. 108 and 111 serve Nanchuan North Railway Station, while nos. 101, 102, 103, 111 and 112 serve Nanchuan Central Bus Station. If you are staying near a bus station or the railway station, you can expect to reach other parts of town by changing between these routes. Fares are typically paid on board, so keep small change or a mobile payment method handy; buy tickets directly from the driver or conductor rather than in advance.

Taxis and Ride-Hailing

Taxis are a practical fallback for trips that buses do not cover conveniently, such as reaching a bus or railway station early in the morning or late at night, or when carrying luggage. Ride-hailing apps work in Chinese cities generally, and are a good option if you do not speak Chinese, since you can enter your destination in the app rather than explaining it to a driver. Have your destination written in Chinese characters to show the driver if needed.

Walkability

Nanchuan's central area is small enough that walking is a reasonable way to cover short distances between your accommodation, restaurants and bus stops. The city is best known for its rice noodles — made with local selenium-rich rice and cooked in strontium-rich spring water from Jinfo Mountain — which are an easy stop on foot. For anything beyond the immediate centre, however, plan on using buses or a taxi, since the main scenic areas lie well outside the urban core.

Getting from the Airport into the City

Chongqing's airport bus station is one of the departure points for long-distance buses to Nanchuan. That means a visitor arriving by air can, in principle, travel from the airport to Nanchuan by bus without first going into central Chongqing. If instead you want to break the journey in Chongqing, you can make your way to Chongqing East Railway Station and take a train to Nanchuan North Railway Station, then continue by local bus (nos. 108 or 111) into town.
