Getting Your Bearings
Beibei is a district of Chongqing municipality, sitting as a satellite town in the north of central Chongqing on the west bank of the Jialing River. It borders Shapingba to the south, Bishan to the west, Hechuan to the north and Yubei to the east. For a visitor, the practical takeaway is that Beibei is part of the wider Chongqing urban system rather than a standalone destination, so the transport you use will be Chongqing's transport — metro, buses, taxis and ride-hailing — with a few local quirks of its own.
Metro and Rail
Beibei is served by Chongqing Rail Transit's Line 6, which runs through the district via Caojiawan, Caijia, Xiangjiagang, Longfengxi, Tiansheng and Beibei. For most visitors this is the backbone of getting in and out: the metro connects Beibei with the rest of the Chongqing network, so you can ride into the city and transfer onward rather than relying on road transport for the whole journey.
Chongqing's rail picture also includes conventional railways crossing the district — the Xiangyu Railway (Xiangfan–Chongqing) and the Suiyu Railway (Suining–Chongqing) — but these are regional rail links rather than a visitor-facing metro-style service, so plan your trips around the metro unless you have a specific reason to use mainline rail.
Tickets are bought in the usual way for a Chinese metro system: at station machines or counters, or by tapping a stored-value transit card. If you plan several rides, a transit card is the simplest option and also works on buses (see below).
Buses and On-Demand Services
Chongqing's bus network extends into Beibei, and the city has been experimenting with flexible services that are especially useful in districts like this one, where terrain and lower-density areas can leave gaps in fixed-route coverage.
- On-demand buses: Launched in early 2024, these are hailed through a smartphone app. Instead of a fixed route, the system computes a route from passengers' locations and destinations, and drivers follow navigation on onboard tablets. Several on-demand routes operate across Beibei, Shapingba and the Chongqing High-Tech Zone. The fare is a flat 2 yuan, payable through the app or with a traditional transit card.
- Specialised shuttles: The same programme includes "Alley Buses" for narrow streets, "Market Shuttles" aimed at grocery shopping trips and "Flower-Viewing Buses" for scenic outings — handy if your plans involve markets or the district's green spaces.
- Fixed-route buses: Conventional services still run alongside these, and transit cards work across them.
Practical tip: download the on-demand bus app before you arrive if you can, and keep a transit card as a backup for both buses and metro.
Taxis and Ride-Hailing
Taxis are available in Beibei as in the rest of Chongqing, and ride-hailing apps are widely used across the city. Ride-hailing is particularly worth considering for trips to sights outside the dense centre — Jinyun Mountain, the North Spring hot springs area, Golden Sword Gorge and the Jialing River gorges are all in the district but not necessarily right on a metro stop. Having a Chinese ride-hailing app set up with a payment method will save you a lot of haggling.
Walking
Beibei's central streets are walkable for everyday needs — meals, shops and getting between nearby stops — but the district is large and hilly in parts, and its headline attractions (the mountains, gorges and hot springs) are spread out. Treat walking as a way to cover the last stretch of a journey rather than as your main way of getting around the district.
Arriving from the Airport
If you are carrying heavy luggage or arriving late, a taxi or ride-hailing car from the airport is the simpler door-to-door option, though it will cost considerably more than the metro.
Road Connections
By road, Beibei is linked by the Yuhe Expressway (Chongqing–Hechuan) and China National Highway 212, which is useful context if you are travelling by car, coach or taxi between Beibei and neighbouring districts.
Quick Practical Summary
- Best all-round option: Metro Line 6 for reaching Beibei and moving between its main stops.
- Best for gaps and low-density areas: On-demand buses via app, flat 2 yuan, transit cards accepted.
- Best for sights outside the centre: Taxi or ride-hailing.
- Payment: A stored-value transit card covers metro and buses; the on-demand bus app handles its own fares.
- From the airport: Metro with a transfer to Line 6, or taxi/ride-hailing for direct door-to-door travel.
