Getting Around Panzhihua

Panzhihua is a city built on mountainous terrain, and that geography shapes how you move around it. The urban center sits on top of steep hills, and the land transport routes run mainly north–south along the river valleys, with only a few east–west routes crossing through mountain passes. As a visitor, expect your journeys to follow the valleys rather than cut straight across the city, and plan a little extra time for routes that climb or wind.

Rail

Panzhihua Station, on the Central Section of Panzhihua Avenue in the Eastern District, is an important node of the Chengdu–Kunming Railway. It provides train services to Chengdu, Kunming and Chongqing, making rail a practical option for arriving in the city or for onward trips to those major destinations. There is no metro or tram network in Panzhihua, so trains serve intercity travel rather than getting around within the city itself.

Buses and Public Transport

Local public transport is bus-based. Buses are the main way to move around the city, with tickets usually costing ¥1–2 per ride. Bus operation hours are generally from 06:00 to 21:00, so plan evening trips with that window in mind.

For longer-distance travel into and out of the region, Panzhihua Bus Terminal Station sits on the Central Section of Panzhihua Avenue in the Eastern District, the same avenue as the railway station. It is open from 06:00 to 22:00 and has a waiting room, ticket window, dining area and other basic facilities. Arriving at the terminal in advance is recommended to ensure a smooth ride.

Taxis and Ride-Hailing

Taxis are available 24 hours a day. The starting price is ¥8, which includes the first 3 kilometers, with the remainder charged by distance. Because the city is spread across hilly terrain, a taxi can be a convenient choice for trips that would otherwise involve climbing or transferring, and the 24-hour availability makes it useful for early departures or late arrivals.

Walkability

Panzhihua's urban center was built on top of mountainous terrain, so walking is best thought of as a way to cover a specific area rather than to cross the city. Expect steep hills and slopes between districts. For anything beyond a short local stroll, a bus or taxi will usually be more practical.

Bicycle, Car and Motorcycle Rental

If you prefer to drive yourself, several options exist:

Self-driving is also a popular way to reach Panzhihua, which is connected to surrounding major cities by highway. Note that some sections of road are mountain roads, so take care, especially during the rainy season.

Getting from the Airport into the City

Panzhihua Bao'anying Airport (PZI) is located at the junction of East Yinjiang Township and Renhe District Jinjiang Township. It receives flights from Chengdu–Shuangliu, Chongqing, Guilin, Shanghai–Pudong, Wuhan, Nanjing, Beijing–Capital and Xi'an, so it is a viable arrival point from several major cities.

Once you land, the practical options for reaching the city mirror the modes described above: taxis, which run 24 hours a day, and local buses during their operating hours. Because the airport lies outside the built-up urban center and the region's roads follow valleys and mountain passes, allow generous time for the transfer and confirm your onward connection in advance.

Arriving by Other Means

Beyond air and rail, Panzhihua is served by long-distance buses at Panzhihua Bus Terminal Station, and it is connected to surrounding major cities by highway, making it a popular route for self-driving travel. The Jinsha River was historically a traditional transportation route, but as of 2024 it is limited to a few sightseeing cruise ships and is not a main way in or out of the city.
