Understanding Gulin's Layout
Gulin County sits in the south of Sichuan Province, bordering Guizhou to the north, south, and east, and is administered by Luzhou city. It is a large, mostly rural county rather than a dense metropolis, and it is organised into three subdistricts — Zhangde, Jinlan, and Yongle — along with a number of towns and ethnic townships scattered across the county. For a visitor, this means that getting around is less about navigating a compact urban grid and more about understanding how the county's main built-up areas connect to one another and to the wider region.
Getting Around the City
Within Gulin's urban core, the practical options are the same ones that serve most Chinese county towns: local buses, taxis, and walking. Because the settled area is relatively contained, short trips are often easiest on foot, while longer hops across town are best handled by bus or taxi.
Rail, Metro and Trams
Gulin does not have its own metro or tram network, and there is no urban rail system within the county. Rail connections in the wider region are oriented toward longer-distance travel rather than daily movement around Gulin itself. If your plans involve rail travel, you should expect to reach a railhead outside the county and continue from there by road.
Buses and Other Public Transport
- Urban buses are the mainstay of local public transport and are the cheapest way to cover longer distances within town.
- Fares are typically low — keep small change or a payment app ready.
- Long-distance buses connect Gulin to Luzhou and to neighbouring areas, and are the usual way to reach the county from outside.
- Motor tricycles are a common local option for short trips. Always agree on the price with the driver before you set off, and be cautious if a driver insists on taking you to particular shops.
Taxis and Ride-Hailing
Taxis are widely available and are a straightforward choice for point-to-point trips, particularly when you are carrying luggage or travelling outside bus hours. Ride-hailing apps work in the same way they do elsewhere in China, and can be useful when you do not speak the local dialect — just make sure your pickup point is clearly marked on the map.
Walkability
Gulin's central areas are compact enough that walking is often the most practical way to get around for short errands, meals, and sightseeing close to where you are staying. Outside the main built-up districts, however, distances between towns and villages are considerable, so walking is best treated as a way to explore a neighbourhood rather than to move between parts of the county.
Getting There by Air
Gulin County does not have its own commercial airport, so air travellers will need to fly into a larger city in the region and continue onward by road. Because the onward journey is substantial, it is worth planning your connection in advance rather than arriving without a plan.
Practical Tips
- Carry small change or set up a mobile payment app — bus fares are low and cash handling can slow you down.
- Agree tricycle fares before you get in, and decline unsolicited detours to shops.
- For trips beyond the county seat, check long-distance bus schedules the day before, as services may be infrequent.
- If you are arriving by air, treat the airport-to-Gulin leg as a separate journey and build in buffer time.
