Getting Around Dazhou

Dazhou is a prefecture-level city in the northeast of Sichuan province, sitting between Chongqing and Xi'an and bordering Shaanxi to the north. It's an important river and land transportation hub for the region, with numerous national highways, expressways, and rail lines passing through and connecting it directly with major cities such as Chengdu, Xi'an, Wuhan, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, and Beijing. For a visitor, that means the city is well connected to the rest of China, and getting around once you arrive is straightforward, if not especially glamorous.

Arriving by Train

Rail is one of the main ways visitors reach Dazhou. The Xiangyu Railway offers service from Xiangyang, Chongqing, Shiyan, Ankang, and Guang'an, while the Dazhou–Chengdu railway connects the city with Chengdu. A branch line from Dacheng links up with the Yiwan Railway, which extends onward toward Wanzhou in Chongqing. If you're coming from within Sichuan or from neighbouring Chongqing and Shaanxi, train is a practical option.

Arriving by Road

China National Highway 210 passes through Dazhou, linking it with Guang'an, Bazhong, Hanzhong, and other cities. The G65 Baomao Expressway and the G5012 Chengdu–Wanyuan Expressway provide fast routes to Chengdu, Chongqing, and Shaanxi. Long-distance buses depart frequently from Dazhou Passenger Transport Center to nearby cities such as Nanchong, Chongqing, Bazhong, and Xi'an. Be aware that traffic can be heavy during public holidays such as Chinese New Year and National Day, so allow extra time if you're travelling around those periods.

Getting from the Airport into the City

Dazhou Jinya Airport (达州金垭机场) is located at No. 1, Airport Avenue, Stone Street, Dazhou High-tech Zone, Dachuan District. It opened in May 2022 and is the largest civilian airport in northeast Sichuan. The airport sits in the Dachuan District, one of the city's two urban districts, so it's on the same side of the built-up area as the city centre rather than out in the countryside. From the airport you can continue into the city by taxi or ride-hailing, or by connecting to the local bus network once you reach the urban districts.

Buses

Dazhou has an extensive city bus network covering all main districts, including Tongchuan, Dachuan, and Dazhu. Most routes operate from around 6:30 AM to 9:00 PM, and fares are usually ¥1–2 depending on the distance. Buses are the most economical way to get around the city, though they can be crowded during rush hours. Major stops and routes have bilingual (Chinese–English) signs in the central area, which makes navigation easier for visitors who don't read Chinese.

For payment, electronic options such as Alipay, WeChat Pay, or transportation cards (交通卡) are widely accepted, so you don't need to worry about carrying exact change.

Taxis and Ride-Hailing

Taxis and ride-hailing apps are the most convenient option for point-to-point trips, particularly when buses are crowded or when you're travelling outside the main bus operating hours. They're also the natural choice for the airport run if you'd rather not navigate the bus network with luggage.

Walkability

Dazhou's terrain is largely mountainous, sitting in the Daba Mountains and adjacent ranges, and the built-up area is made up of two urban districts. That means walking is pleasant enough within a district or neighbourhood, but the city's geography and layout make it less suited to crossing the whole city on foot. For longer journeys, combine walking with buses or taxis.
