Getting Your Bearings
Wenchang is a county-level city on the northeast coast of Hainan Island, made up of a main urban centre, Wencheng Town, and a scatter of coastal and rural towns such as Longlou, Dongjiao, Puqian and Wengtian. Distances between these places are real, so plan your transport around which part of Wenchang you actually want to see: Wencheng for city life and the old street, Longlou for the spaceport and nearby coastal sights, Dongjiao for the coconut groves.
Arriving by Air and Rail
Haikou Meilan Airport is the main gateway to the region, and the high-speed rail provides an efficient connection from the airport to Wenchang. Wenchang Railway Station sits on Hainan's circular high-speed rail network, which links together all the coastal cities on the island, so the train is a straightforward way to reach Wenchang from elsewhere in Hainan as well.
Getting from the Airport into the City
The practical route from Haikou Meilan Airport is to connect to the high-speed rail, which runs you through to Wenchang Railway Station in Wencheng Town. If you would rather go by road, the drive from Haikou to Wenchang takes about an hour, and buses from Haikou mainly depart from Haikou East Bus Station, with services not only to Wencheng but also to several other towns in Wenchang. Buses to Wenchang are also available from Sanya and other cities on the island, though these tend to be much less frequent.
Rail
Wenchang Railway Station is on Huochezhan Road in Wencheng Town. Because it is part of the island's circular high-speed rail line, it is the most reliable way to move between Wenchang and Hainan's other coastal cities. Note that the station serves Wencheng Town; if your destination is the coast around Longlou, you will still need a road connection onward.
Buses
Local buses are the main form of public transport within Wenchang city. Wenchang Bus Station on Xinfeng Road in Wencheng Town is the main central bus station, and local bus routes serve it. A second hub, Longlou Town Bus Station on Wentong West Road, is far from the downtown area but convenient if you are visiting the tourist attractions around Longlou; tourist buses call there. Long-distance buses from Haikou and other Hainan cities arrive at these stations, so the bus network doubles as both your intercity link and your local transport.
- Wenchang Bus Station — 275 Xinfeng, Wencheng Town; the main central bus station.
- Longlou Town Bus Station — Wentong West Road, Longlou Town; useful for the Longlou attractions rather than the city centre.
Taxis and Ride-Hailing
Taxis and Didi (ride-hailing) are convenient for longer distances within the city. This is the mode to lean on when a bus route does not line up with where you are going, or when you are covering the gaps between Wencheng and the coastal towns.
Driving and Cycling
If you were considering driving yourself, note that an International Driving Permit is not recognized in mainland China. Cycling is a genuine option for local exploration, and the Dongjiao Coconut Grove area is a good place for it. The provincial road between Haikou and Wenchang has historically been popular with beginner and amateur cyclists because it is flat and easy to ride, but it has also been subject to extensive reconstruction, leaving stretches dusty, muddy and busy with construction trucks. A more pleasant alternative route runs Haikou–Fenglai–Nanyang–Wenchang.
Walking
Walking is best suited to specific areas rather than the city as a whole. Wencheng Old Street, known as Wennan Old Street, is the standout walk: it sits in the heart of the town, lined with fully restored tong lau buildings, with a central park and covered market downtown nearby. For coastal walking and cycling, head to Dongjiao Coconut Grove.
Paying for Transport
Mobile payment dominates in Wenchang — WeChat Pay and Alipay are the norm, and international cards can be linked to them. Cash is less common but still accepted at smaller venues. Tipping is not customary and can cause confusion, so do not offer it to drivers.
Practical Tips for Getting Around
- Language: English proficiency is limited, and Wenchang sees fewer international tourists than Sanya, so bus drivers, shops and restaurants rarely have English speakers. Translation apps such as Pleco (for characters) and Baidu Translate (voice and image) are worth having ready.
- Connectivity: A VPN is required to access international websites and apps, and it must be installed before you arrive in China. A local SIM or eSIM is available.
- Power: 220V; bring an adapter.
- Emergencies: Police 110, ambulance 120, fire 119. English-speaking operators are rare.
- Water: Tap water is not safe to drink; use bottled or boiled water.
- Entry: A Health Declaration Form is required for entry. Hainan has a 59-country visa-free policy (conditions apply); most other visitors need a visa.
- Safety: Wenchang is generally safe, but watch for petty crime in crowded areas.
Timing Your Travel
Weather shapes how easily you get around. The dry season from November to April brings the best weather and is high season, so book accommodation two to three months ahead. The rainy season runs May to October with heavy downpours, and typhoon risk falls between July and October, peaking in August and September — monitor local forecasts and build slack into your plans. Summer highs exceed 30°C with high humidity, which makes walking and cycling less appealing in the middle of the day.
Rough Daily Budget
For planning transport and everything else, a budget traveller might spend around ¥200–400 a day, a mid-range traveller ¥500–1000, and a luxury traveller ¥1500 or more.
