For a visitor, this means most of what you'll want to see and do sits within a fairly tight central district, with the surrounding countryside — including the lychee orchards the area is known for — spread out beyond it.
Arriving in Gaozhou
Gaozhou has no airport and no major railway station of its own, so you will almost always arrive by transferring through a larger neighbouring city. The practical gateways are Zhanjiang, Wuzhou, and Yulin, all of which have airports and high-speed rail connections.
- By plane: Fly into Zhanjiang, Yulin, or Wuzhou, then continue to Gaozhou by expressway transfer.
- By train: High-speed lines pass through the major hubs; transfer at Zhanjiang or Wuzhou station, then continue by local train or express bus to Gaozhou's central district.
- By bus: Long-distance services link Gaozhou with most major cities in Guangdong and neighbouring regions, with regular routes from Zhanjiang and Yulin and bus terminals in Wuzhou and nearby centres.
- By car: Driving in from Zhanjiang takes just under two hours; from Wuzhou or Yulin, expect roughly two and a half to three hours. Taxis and car rental are available from the airports and hotels.
Whichever hub you choose, the final leg into Gaozhou is by road, so budget for a transfer rather than a direct arrival at a city-centre station.
Getting Around the City
Within Gaozhou itself, getting around is straightforward and low-key. There is no metro or tram network here — this is a county-level city, and local movement is by road.
- Local buses cover all the key areas of the city, making them a workable option for reaching most places you'd want to go.
- Taxis booked through the Didi app are described as the most convenient way to get around, particularly if you don't speak Chinese or aren't sure of local bus routes.
For a visitor, the sensible approach is to rely on Didi for point-to-point trips and local buses for straightforward routes along main corridors. Walking is practical within the central district, but the wider county area is too spread out to cover on foot.

- Payments: The currency is the Chinese Yuan (CNY), and QR-code payments via Alipay and WeChat Pay are widely used. Install and set these up before you arrive, as they are the default way to pay for many everyday transactions.
- Language: There is little English spoken locally. Carry an offline translator and have your hotel address written in Chinese characters to show drivers.
- Timing: Avoid travelling during national holidays such as Chinese New Year, when transport becomes congested.
- Climate: The area is subtropical — light natural-fabric clothing suits summer, while a windbreaker or light sweater is useful in winter.
