An overview of getting around Zhaotong
Zhaotong is a prefecture-level city in the northeast corner of Yunnan, bordering Guizhou and Sichuan. For a visitor, the practical picture is fairly simple: there is no metro or tram network to learn, and getting around relies on local buses, long-distance coaches, taxis and walking. The city is also a gateway to surrounding towns and scenic areas, so understanding the bus stations and the airport connection matters more than mastering an urban rail system.
Rail connections
Zhaotong has train services linking it to Kunming, Chengdu and Guangzhou. Rail is therefore a realistic option for arriving from or continuing to those cities.
Buses and long-distance coaches
Long-distance bus is described as the most convenient way to reach nearby cities from Zhaotong — more flexible than flying and less crowded than the train. Tickets can be bought through apps such as Ctrip and Fliggy, which is useful if you want to reserve before you arrive.
The main stations to know are:
- Zhaotong Bus Station — roughly 300 m south of Yuanda Square; telephone (0870)2237056 or (0870)2222154.
- Ludian Bus Station — No. 280 Shijie Avenue, Ludian County; telephone 0870-8122959.
- Yiliang Bus Station — No. 9 North Huancheng Road; telephone 0870-8886102.
- Yanjin Bus Station — Huangjia Village, Xincun Street, Yanjing Town; telephone 0870-6632669.
One practical caution: when a schedule says "Zhaotong," it generally refers to Zhaoyang District. Station details are for reference only and are subject to what the stations themselves publish, so confirm before you travel.
Reaching Dashanbao by bus
If Dashanbao is on your itinerary, the morning minibus leaves from Zhengyu Rural Passenger Station in Zhaotong, with the first departure reported at 9:00 AM and a journey of about two hours. Buy tickets in advance. The last bus back to the city leaves Dashanbao at 4:00 PM, and return services are infrequent, so timing your day matters. Inside the scenic area, an all-access sightseeing pass covers shuttle buses between attractions with unlimited transfers for the day.
Take only official buses from the passenger station and avoid unlicensed taxis soliciting passengers at the station entrance. Note that these details come from a single traveler's report and are not officially confirmed.
Taxis and ride-hailing
The one clear guidance is the safety warning above: at bus stations, use official transport rather than unlicensed taxis approaching passengers. Treat this as a general habit when arriving at stations.
Walking and city sights
Several of Zhaotong's city attractions are free and clustered in the downtown area, which makes walking a sensible way to combine them: Zhaotong Ancient Town (including Dou Street, West Street, Fuzhen Gate and the old guild halls), Qingguanting Park, Shengeng Culture Park and Wanghai Park.
Getting from Zhaotong Airport into the city
Zhaotong Airport (ZAT) has flights to Kunming, Chengdu, Chongqing, Beijing and Guiyang.
Practical tips
- Book coach tickets through Ctrip or Fliggy when you can, and confirm station details by phone before traveling.
- For Dashanbao, buy the morning minibus ticket in advance and plan around the 4:00 PM return.
- Bring food and water for Dashanbao — there are almost no restaurants inside the scenic area — and prepare for a large day–night temperature swing, strong UV and possible altitude sickness (an oxygen canister is advised).
- Stick to official buses and licensed transport at stations.
