Orientation
Yuxi is a prefecture-level city in central Yunnan, about 90 km south of the provincial capital, Kunming. Its administrative centre is Hongta District, which is where most visitors will spend their time. The city also administers the surrounding counties of Jiangchuan, Tonghai and Chengjiang, and several lakes — Fuxian, Xingyun, Qilu and Yangzong — lie within reach for day trips.
Getting around the city
Yuxi's urban core is compact and fairly flat, which makes it unusually pleasant to explore on foot. Much of the city is walkable, and cycling is a viable way to cover more ground. Beyond walking and cycling, the practical options are the urban bus system and taxis or ride-hailing.
Rail
Yuxi sits on the Kunming–Yuxi–Hekou railway corridor, and the city's rail station is the new Yuxi Railway Station, which replaced the old Yuxi West Railway Station (near downtown on Hongta Street) when that station closed in December 2016. The new station lies a few kilometres southwest of downtown, surrounded by strawberry fields; because the surrounding road network was still being completed, it can feel farther from the centre than it actually is.
Two kinds of service call at the new station:
- Conventional trains on the Kunming–Hekou line, several a day, which stop at Yuxi and continue to places such as Kunyang (between Kunming and Yuxi), Tonghai and Mengzi on the way to Hekou. These depart from Kunming Railway Station, south of Kunming's downtown.
- Intercity services on the newer line, introduced in late 2016, which are faster and more frequent and initially ran non-stop from Kunming. As of 2017 these departed from Kunming South (Kunmingnan) high-speed station, though Kunming's rail network was undergoing major reconstruction at the time, so the departure station may have changed since.
For long-distance trips, the usual pattern is to arrive first at Kunming and then transfer to a frequent local train down to Yuxi. Urban buses 7, 11, 15 and 22 serve the new Yuxi Railway Station.
Buses and other public transport
Yuxi has a reasonable urban bus system, and it is the main alternative to taxis for getting around town. Buses also serve specific sights, which is useful if you are heading to a particular attraction:
- Nie Er Former Residence: buses 6, 7 and 13.
- Wenxingxiang Former Site: buses 6, 7, 10, 13, 19, 26 and 60.
- Red Pagoda: bus 2.
- Yuxi Kiln Site: buses 2 and 9.
- Yuxi Museum: buses 2, 13 and 20 — alight at Hongta Hotel (红塔大酒店); the museum is southwest of Nie Er Park.
For intercity travel, express buses connect Yuxi with many destinations, and most arrivals come from Kunming, a journey of just over an hour. Services also run from Luxi and Wenshan, taking roughly three to four hours. Yuxi Central Bus Station is north of downtown. The modern expressway network makes bus travel comfortable.
Taxis and ride-hailing
Taxis are a convenient way to get around, with a flag fall of ¥8 in town. Ride-hailing through the Didi app is described as the most convenient option by some travellers, and is also recommended for longer transfers such as from Kunming. One practical caution: Google Maps may not work correctly in the area, so it is worth using local navigation apps instead.
Walking
Much of Yuxi is walkable and fairly flat, making it ideal for exploration on foot or by bicycle. Old hutong-style buildings remain in the town centre, some of which now operate as restaurants. Strawberry fields sit on the city edges and along the roads to neighbouring towns, with pick-your-own signs at some farms.
Getting from the airport into the city
Yuxi has no civil airport of its own. The nearest major hub is Kunming Changshui International Airport (KMG), roughly an hour away and one of China's largest transport hubs, with both domestic and international flights. Alternative airports — Luxi (LUM) and Wenshan (WNH) — are considerably farther and offer less efficient connections, so most visitors will arrive via Kunming.
From Kunming, the options are:
- Car or taxi: the drive is about an hour in normal traffic via multi-lane highway. Taxis from Kunming are described as affordable, and ride-hailing apps are recommended.
- Bus: intercity express buses run from Kunming to Yuxi many times a day, taking just over an hour, arriving at Yuxi Central Bus Station north of downtown.
- Train: for long-distance trips, travellers typically arrive first at Kunming's main railway station and then transfer to a frequent local train to Yuxi.
At airports and train stations, avoid unlicensed carriers.
Practical tips
- Payments: Alipay and WeChat Pay dominate; set these up in advance with an international card and keep some yuan in cash as a backup.
- Language: Mandarin is the primary language and English is rarely spoken outside major hotels, so an offline translator is useful. Carry your hotel address card in Chinese.
- Climate: mild but changeable — bring a light jacket or sweater for evenings even in summer, and comfortable shoes for natural attractions.
- Safety: Yuxi is considered safe; drink bottled water.
- Etiquette: a slight nod is the traditional greeting; queuing is customary, though sometimes ignored in busy spots.
- Food: Yuxi is known for its own variations of "Across-the-Bridge Rice Noodles." Muslim and Halal food is readily available, and standard chains such as KFC and Dicos are present.
