Getting Your Bearings
Ning'er Hani and Yi Autonomous County sits in the centre of Pu'er City in southern Yunnan Province, an area of mountains, tea gardens and ethnic villages that was once the historical heart of ancient Pu'er Prefecture and a stop on the Ancient Tea Horse Road. The practical consequence for a visitor is that the county town itself is small and easy to navigate on foot, while the places most worth seeing — tea mountains, Hani and Yi villages, old towns along the tea road — are scattered across a mountainous landscape where public transport thins out quickly.
How Tourists Get Around
Within the county town, walking covers most short trips, and taxis, local vehicles and electric scooters are available for anything further. Once you leave the town, the picture changes: remote villages and mountain tea gardens generally have no direct public transport, so a private car, a chartered vehicle or a local driver becomes the realistic option. Drivers who know the mountain roads are worth the extra cost, and a chartered car with a local driver is the recommended approach for reaching ethnic villages, tea gardens and heritage sites.
Self-driving is possible and the main highways and county roads are generally good, but village mountain roads are narrow with many bends. Practical precautions: refuel in Ning'er town or at township centres before heading into the mountains, avoid night driving because lighting is limited, and take care in the rainy season when falling rocks and slippery roads are hazards. Parking is convenient at Nakeli and Mohei, where you can use designated village parking areas.
Motorcycles are a popular way to take in the mountain scenery, with routes such as Ning'er Town to Nakeli and on to Kunlu Mountain, or Ning'er Town to Mengxian Town and Bengzha Hani Village. If you ride, carry protective gear, rain gear, repair tools and warm clothing — mountain weather changes quickly, and the rainy season brings fog and slippery roads. Cycling suits short trips such as the run from Ning'er Town to Nakeli Tea Horse Road Village, past tea fields, rivers and countryside, but long-distance cycling to Kunlu Mountain, Bengzha or Liming is not recommended because of steep climbs and limited roadside services. The best season for cycling is November to April.
Rail
Ning'er Railway Station is served by the China-Laos Railway, which links Kunming, Pu'er and Xishuangbanna. Trains from Kunming depart from Kunming South Railway Station. The station sits a short distance from the county centre, and a taxi transfer is the usual way to reach hotels and attractions from there.
Buses and Other Public Transport
Ning'er Passenger Transport Station is the hub for long-distance buses, with connections to the Pu'er urban area (frequent daily services), Kunming, Mojiang County, Lancang County, Jinggu County and Xishuangbanna. Locally, township buses run from Ning'er town to Tongxin, Mengxian, Mohei, Liming and De'an, but they stop at township centres rather than at traditional villages — the final leg usually requires a local motorcycle, a private car or a chartered vehicle.
Taxis and Ride-Hailing
Taxis and local vehicles are available in the county town for short trips, and a taxi is the standard transfer from Ning'er Railway Station to the centre. For anything beyond the town — villages, tea gardens, remote heritage sites — arrange a private car, a chartered vehicle or a local driver rather than relying on metered taxis.
Walkability
The county town is compact and walking is practical for short distances. The Pu'er Ethnic Unity Oath Monument, for example, is within the county centre and reachable on foot or by a quick taxi ride.
Getting In from the Airport
The nearest airport is Pu'er Simao Airport in Simao District, roughly a 45-minute drive from the Ning'er county town. Transfers into Ning'er are made by taxi, private or chartered car, or local bus.
Practical Notes for Reaching the Sights
- Nakeli Tea Horse Road Village (Tongxin Town): close to the main road and easy to access, with parking available.
- Mohei Ancient Town (Mohei Town): good road and easy access, with convenient parking.
- Kunlu Mountain Ancient Tea Garden (Ning'er Town): reached by a winding mountain road; a private vehicle is recommended.
- Bengzha Hani Village and Shangxuande Hani Village (Mengxian Town): require a transfer after the township centre, with mountain village roads beyond.
- Kongqueping Traditional Village (Mohei Town): an Ancient Tea Horse Road village area.
- Liming Yi Villages (Liming Township): a long mountain road; a chartered vehicle is recommended.
Two general rules make everything easier. First, carry offline maps, since mobile signal is weak in some valleys. Second, plan around the seasons: the dry season from November to April is best for road travel, while May to October brings rain, fog, slippery roads and occasional landslides.
