Getting Your Bearings
Kaiyuan (开远) is a county-level city in central Honghe Hani and Yi Autonomous Prefecture, Yunnan, and it sits on the historic Yunnan–Vietnam transport corridor. That history matters for visitors: modern highways and high-speed rail run alongside a century-old metre-gauge railway, and the city functions as a transport hub for the surrounding prefecture. Practically speaking, this means you can reach Kaiyuan by high-speed train, long-distance bus or car, and once you're in town the center is compact enough that walking, local buses and taxis cover most needs.
Arriving by Rail
Kaiyuan South Railway Station (开远南站) is the city's rail gateway, served by the Mile–Mengzi High-Speed Railway, which links Mile, Zhuyuan, Pengpu, Kaiyuan and Honghe Station, and connects to the wider high-speed network at Mile.
- Direct trains run from Kunming South Railway Station to Kaiyuan South. If no direct service suits your timing, transfer at Mile Railway Station (弥勒站), or take a service heading toward Honghe Railway Station (红河站) that stops at Kaiyuan South.
- When searching on booking platforms or China Railway 12306, search for "开远南" (Kaiyuan South), not "开远" — the latter may not return the right station.
- Kaiyuan South Station sits outside the traditional city center. To reach downtown, use a taxi, ride-hailing, the station bus, or a prearranged transfer. Station bus routes and intervals vary with train arrivals, so check what's running when you land.
Arriving by Air
Kaiyuan has no commercial passenger airport. Honghe Mengzi Airport appears in official plans, but commercial operation is not confirmed — official investment information has described civilian operations as expected rather than established. Plan around that uncertainty.
- Kunming Changshui International Airport is the reliable air gateway. The usual pattern is to connect via Kunming South Railway Station and then take the train to Kaiyuan South.
- Wenshan Puzhehei Airport is an alternative, but road access is less convenient and schedules are limited.
Long-Distance and Intercity Buses
Kaiyuan South Bus Station (开远汽车客运南站) is a key departure point for intercity and long-distance services, including the Kaiyuan–Mengzi intercity bus.
- Possible destinations include Mengzi, Mile, Gejiu, Jianshui, Luxi, Hekou, Yuanyang and other Honghe counties, plus selected longer-distance routes. Not all routes run daily.
- Older references may point you to Kaiyuan Passenger Transport Station (开远汽车客运站) or to separate north and south terminals. Terminal functions and names can change, so verify your departure point when buying tickets.
- Buy tickets at the station, on local transport platforms, or through Chinese travel apps. Passports may be required for ID. Book ahead during Spring Festival, National Day and major local events.
- The Kaiyuan–Mengzi intercity bus links Kaiyuan South Bus Station with major urban stops in both Kaiyuan and Mengzi at regular intervals, though routes, stops and hours may have changed since it began. The Kaiyuan–Mile service was an early route converted to a frequent bus-style model — useful when train times don't suit you or when city-center stops are closer than the railway stations.
- Services to Gejiu, Jianshui, Yuanyang and similar places may be conventional coaches, customized transport or shared vehicles rather than fixed-frequency buses. Official Honghe information confirms intercity links between Mengzi–Kaiyuan, Gejiu–Pingbian, and Mile–Luxi.
Urban Buses
Local buses connect residential areas, commercial districts, railway-related sites, parks and selected attractions, with stops displaying route information in Chinese.
- Because the city is compact, many urban journeys are short. Routes and frequencies may be reduced in the evening, so plan around that.
- Previously listed routes include Bus 6 for the Phoenix Ecological Park area and Bus 2 for the Nandong area. Routes are occasionally adjusted — confirm via a current navigation app before boarding.
Taxis and Ride-Hailing
Taxis are widely available in the urban area. Use licensed taxis and make sure the meter is used where applicable, and carry your destination name in Chinese to show the driver.
- Availability drops late at night or during large events.
- Ride-hailing apps require Chinese-compatible mobile payment and local or roaming data. Hotel staff can often help you set this up or book a car for you.
Walking
Central areas are walkable, particularly around Nanzheng Street Historic and Cultural District (南正街历史文化街区), Luzhou Park (泸江公园) and the old railway neighborhoods. Farther attractions such as Nandong and rural tourism areas need a bus, taxi or private vehicle.
Rural Transport
Minibuses and shared passenger vehicles serve some villages and townships. Be aware that these may depart only once enough passengers have gathered, rather than on a strict timetable — build in flexibility if you're heading out of the city.
Driving Yourself
Kaiyuan is connected by expressways, national and provincial roads, with major routes including the G323 and G326 national highways and expressway links toward Mile, Mengzi, Gejiu, Jianshui and Hekou.
- From Kunming, the route runs through central Yunnan toward Mile, then south to Kaiyuan. Holiday traffic can add time near Kunming, Mile and service areas.
- From Mile, expressway and ordinary roads make this one of the easiest self-driving combinations in central Honghe.
- From Mengzi, the expressway link is convenient and it's possible to combine both cities in a day; expect slower traffic near urban entrances and industrial areas.
- From Gejiu, regional roads cross mountain terrain with bends and elevation changes — reduce speed in rain or fog.
- From Hekou, the route follows the Honghe corridor northward; check weather, road maintenance and border-area regulations.
- A foreign licence or International Driving Permit alone is not sufficient in mainland China. Visitors normally need a valid Chinese driving licence or an approved temporary Chinese driving permit.
- Use a legally registered rental vehicle, carry your passport and driving documents, confirm insurance coverage, download a Chinese navigation app, avoid unverified mountain shortcuts, and watch for motorcycles, agricultural vehicles and pedestrians. Never park on or near railway tracks or facilities, and check whether your rental company permits travel to border counties.
