Getting Around Laiwu: An Overview
Laiwu sits in central Shandong Province, bordered by Jinan to the north, Zibo to the east and Tai'an to the southwest. It was formerly a prefecture-level city in its own right, but since 2019 it has been part of Jinan, the provincial capital. For a visitor this matters mainly in practical terms: Laiwu is a compact urban area made up of two districts, Laicheng and Gangcheng, and much of what you need is concentrated within it. Public buses, taxis, ride-hailing apps and a public bicycle scheme are the main ways of moving around, and the city is also well connected by expressway to the rest of Shandong.
Rail Connections
Laiwu has a single passenger railway station, Laiwudong Railway Station on Daqiao N. Rd in Laiwu District. It is served by ordinary trains rather than high-speed services. Useful regional links include Taishan, reachable on one normal train in about an hour and a half for a very low fare, and Zibo, also served by a normal train but with a considerably longer journey time. If you are arriving by rail, expect a conventional station experience rather than a large high-speed hub, and plan your onward transport from the station into the city accordingly.
There is no metro or tram network in Laiwu, so rail is not a way of getting around within the city itself — it is a means of arriving from or leaving for neighbouring towns.
Buses and Public Transport
Local buses are the workhorse of getting around Laiwu. Fares are low: a standard bus ride costs ¥1, while air-conditioned buses cost ¥2. You can tell an air-conditioned bus by the letter K at the start of its route number. Buses beginning with K20 are long-distance services with a fare of ¥3, typically running to or from the suburbs, which may be some distance away — worth knowing if you board one by mistake.
One practical caveat for visitors who do not read Chinese: voice announcements at bus stops and on board are usually not provided in English, so it helps to have your destination written in Chinese and to keep an eye on your stop.
For longer journeys within the province, Laiwu bus terminal on Wenhe Street in Laiwu District is the largest bus station in the city. Travelling by bus is often the easiest option from elsewhere in Shandong, thanks to fast expressways linking Laiwu with the provincial metropolitan areas. There are several buses a day from the central districts of Jinan, as well as services from Tai'an, Qufu, and the coastal cities of Qingdao and Rizhao.
Taxis and Ride-Hailing
Taxis are readily available during the day, with fares starting at ¥7. The main difficulty is language: drivers usually do not speak English and generally cannot read English maps or destinations. To be sure of reaching the right place, write your destination in Chinese, or book through a mobile app instead. Ride-hailing is the more reliable option if you do not speak Chinese.
Availability thins out later in the day — it becomes difficult to find a taxi after 21:00, and also in remote locations. If you do speak Chinese, you can call the taxi company on +86 0531 667788; if not, use a mobile application to summon a car.
Public Bicycles
Laiwu operates a public bicycle scheme with stations across the city. Bicycles can be borrowed and ridden free of charge for the first hour using your card. When the hour is nearly up, you can find a nearby station, swipe your card and swap to another bicycle to enjoy another free hour. If you already hold a bicycle IC card from another city in Shandong Province, it can also be used in Laiwu — a convenient option for cyclists travelling around the region.
Walkability
Laiwu's built-up area is compact, and the city's population is concentrated in its two urban districts, which makes walking a reasonable option for short trips within the centre. That said, the source material does not describe pedestrian infrastructure in detail, so for longer cross-city journeys or for reaching outlying areas, the bus, taxi or public bicycle will generally be more practical.
Getting In from the Airport
The nearest major airport is Jinan Yaoqiang International Airport. From there, the straightforward option for reaching Laiwu is to take the bus: the trip takes about two hours and costs ¥60. Given that taxi drivers in Laiwu may not read English and that the airport is some distance away, the bus is the simplest choice for most visitors arriving by air.
Arriving by Car
Laiwu is an important transportation hub in Shandong, and several expressways connect it to the surrounding region. These include the Jinghu Expressway (G2) between Beijing and Shanghai, the Qinglan Expressway (G22) between Qingdao and Lanzhou, the Laitai Expressway (S26) linking Laiwu with Tai'an, and the Bintai Expressway (S29) between Binzhou and Taierzhuang. If you are driving yourself or being driven, these routes make Laiwu easy to reach from across the province.
