Getting Around Heze: An Overview
Heze is the westernmost prefecture-level city in Shandong province, and its main urban core sits in Mudan District, where the municipal government and most city services are concentrated. For a visitor, the practical picture is simple: the city has a long-distance bus station and a train station, buses and taxis cover the built-up area, and much of the central city is walkable. There is no metro or tram network to plan around — getting around relies on buses, taxis, ride-hailing, and your own two feet.
Arriving by Rail
Heze is served by two railway stations, and knowing which one you want matters before you book:
- Heze Railway Station (菏泽站) on Zhonghua Road — the more central of the two, convenient for the main city area.
- Hezedong Railway Station (菏泽东站) in Tuzihe village, Dingtao District — located out in Dingtao District, so allow extra time to reach the city center.
Both stations connect Heze to the wider regional rail network. Buy tickets the usual way in China: at station ticket counters or through the official national rail booking app, using your passport as ID. If your train arrives at Hezedong, plan on a taxi or bus ride into the central city rather than a short walk.
Buses and Public Transport
The city bus network is the main form of public transport for visitors and residents alike, and it is possible to get around Heze by bus. Two practical cautions:
- Buses shut down on major holidays such as during the Chinese New Year, so do not count on them during that period.
- There is no metro or tram system in Heze, so buses are the only scheduled public transport option to build an itinerary around.
Fares are typically paid in cash or by tapping a transit card or mobile payment app at the front of the bus; ask at your hotel or the bus station about the current local payment method, since this varies. For longer trips within the prefecture — to counties such as Caoxian, Yuncheng, or Shanxian — the long-distance bus station is the place to start.
Taxis and Ride-Hailing
Taxis are the most flexible way to move around Heze, and they are very inexpensive:
- About ¥10 will get you most places in town.
- If you are going out to one of the surrounding villages, expect cab rides of around ¥150.
Ride-hailing apps work in Chinese cities generally, and are a useful fallback when you cannot flag a cab or when language is a barrier — the destination is entered in the app rather than explained to the driver. Have your destination written in Chinese characters ready either way.
Walking
It is possible to get around much of the city by walking. The central area around Mudan District is the most practical for pedestrians, and walking is a good way to reach markets, restaurants, and everyday sights without dealing with traffic. For anything beyond the central districts — the railway stations in Dingtao, the airport, or the surrounding counties — use a bus or a taxi instead.
Getting In from Heze Mudan Airport
Heze Mudan Airport (菏泽牡丹机场) is the city's airport, located near Huangzhuang Village, Menghai Town, in Dingtao District, roughly 25 km northwest of the Heze city center. It is not within walking distance of town, so plan your onward transfer in advance. The airport is served by an airport coach connecting it with the city; this is the standard option for reaching central Heze. A taxi is the alternative if you prefer a direct ride, and given how inexpensive cabs are in Heze, it is a reasonable choice — but confirm the fare or use a ride-hailing app before setting off, since airport runs are longer than in-town trips.
Practical Tips
- Keep small cash on hand for bus fares and short cab rides.
- Write your destination in Chinese characters — useful for taxi drivers and bus staff.
- Check bus service around Chinese New Year, when buses shut down.
- Decide which railway station you need before booking: Heze Station is central, Hezedong Station is out in Dingtao District.
- For trips to surrounding counties and villages, start from the long-distance bus station or arrange a taxi.
