Orientation
Yuci District is part of Jinzhong in Shanxi Province and contains the seat of the Jinzhong municipal government. For a visitor, the practical upshot is that Yuci and Jinzhong are closely intertwined: the main railway stations and the central bus terminal that serve the wider Jinzhong area sit inside Yuci District itself. Yuci also sits right next to Taiyuan, and the two cities are linked by public transport, so it is easy to treat them as a single area for getting around.
Rail: two stations, two very different roles
Yuci District has two main railway stations, and which one you use depends on the kind of train you are taking.
- Jinzhong Railway Station (晋中站), on Hongmaying Street in Yuci District, is the main station for high-speed train services. It is served by local bus routes 1, 201 and 205.
- Yuci Railway Station (榆次站), at 103 Yingbin Street in Yuci District, only handles regular-speed trains, but its advantage is that it sits closer to the city centre. It is served by bus routes 1, 2, 4 (including both the inner and outer circle routes), 5, 15, 203, 207 and 801, and can be reached by phone on +86 354 3062207.
In short: pick Jinzhong Railway Station for high-speed services, and Yuci Railway Station if you want to be nearer the centre and are travelling on a regular-speed train. Both are well connected to the local bus network, so you can reach either one by bus from elsewhere in the district.
Buses and other public transport
Local buses are the workhorse of getting around Yuci. The numbered routes listed above for the two railway stations give a sense of the network: routes such as 1, 2, 4, 5, 15, 201, 203, 205, 207 and 801 thread through the district and connect the stations with the rest of the city.
Because Jinzhong is so close to Taiyuan, some Taiyuan-based public buses cross over into Jinzhong. Bus no. 901, for example, runs from Taiyuan Railway Station to the centre of Jinzhong, which makes it a useful link if you are coming from Taiyuan rather than from within Yuci.
For longer-distance coach travel, the Jinzhong Bus Terminal (晋中市汽车客运总站) is the main central bus station. It sits at the southeast corner of the intersection of National Highway 108 and Longhu Street in Yuci District, and is served by local bus routes 3, 101, 106 and 205; the phone number is +86 354 3984222. Be aware that not many buses depart from here — mostly services to nearby towns. For longer routes you will probably need to use one of the bus stations in Taiyuan instead.
A tourist bus for the sights
If your goal is the region's famous attractions rather than the city itself, a special tourist bus operates from Yuci Old Town. Its stops include Yuci Old Town, the Chang Family Compound, the Qiao Family Compound, Pingyao Old Town, Mianshan and the Wang Family Compound. This is the simplest way to string together the area's headline sights without arranging your own transport.
Taxis and ride-hailing
The source material for Yuci does not describe taxi or ride-hailing services in the district, so there is no specific local guidance to pass on here. As a general fallback, taxis and app-based ride-hailing are the usual options for door-to-door trips when buses do not go where you need, and the two railway stations and the central bus terminal are the obvious places to pick one up.
Walking
Yuci Railway Station's main selling point is that it is closer to the city centre than the high-speed station, which tells you something useful: the central area is compact enough that being on foot near the centre is an advantage. Beyond that, the source material does not describe the district's walkability in detail, so plan on walking for short hops around the centre and using buses for anything longer.
Getting in from the airport
The nearest airport is Taiyuan Wusu International Airport, which lies just outside Jinzhong's municipal boundaries. Buses run between the airport and the city centre roughly eight times a day, and the fare is ¥3. That bus is the straightforward, cheap way into the city; if the timing does not suit your arrival, a taxi or ride-hailing trip is the alternative.
