Orientation
Yangpu is a central Shanghai district lying northeast of the downtown core. It is mostly residential, and it is home to the main campuses of Fudan and Tongji universities. Its commercial heart is Wujiaochang, a large roundabout ringed by shopping centres, restaurants and entertainment venues. Most visitor destinations in the district sit either around Wujiaochang or along the Siping Road corridor, which makes the metro the natural backbone of any trip here.
Getting around by metro
The metro is the simplest way to reach and move through Yangpu. Lines 8 and 10 are the main routes into the district from downtown, both running north through Yangpu and terminating in its northern reaches.
- Line 8 (deep blue, not to be confused with the sky-blue Line 9) connects People's Square and points south with Yangpu and neighbouring Hongkou, serving mostly residential areas. Useful stops include Siping Road, which interchanges with Line 10, and Huangxing Park. Northbound trains are signed for Shiguang Road.
- Line 10 (lavender) is the newer line into Yangpu. It serves Tongji University station at the university's southeast gate on Siping Road, plus Wujiaochang and Jiangwan Stadium — the latter is actually closer to most of the shopping and entertainment. Line 10 also offers a direct connection to Hongqiao Railway Station and Hongqiao Airport. Northbound trains are signed for Xinjiangwancheng.
- Line 4, the ring line, only clips Yangpu along its southwestern boundary with Hongkou below Dalian Road, at Dalian Road and Yangshupu Road stations. Dalian Road also serves Line 12.
If you are arriving from Shanghai Railway Station, note that the Line 3 and 4 platforms are in the North Square while Line 1 is in the South Square. From there you can take Line 3 to Hongkou Football Stadium and transfer to Line 8 — a long transfer from elevated to underground platforms — or take Line 4 to Hailun Road and transfer to Line 10, which is entirely underground and possibly faster.
Buses and other public transport
Numerous bus services connect Yangpu with the surrounding areas, and they are useful for filling gaps the metro leaves, especially around the universities and the district's parks.
- Buses 59, 749 and 942 run west along Handan Road to Fudan University's main campus front gates.
- Buses 406 and 819 run from Wujiaochang to Shanghai University of Finance and Economics.
- Bus 90 runs from Wujiaochang to the Hengren Road/Qingyuan Ring Road stop for the Shanghai Institute of Physical Education.
- Bus 102 runs from Xiangyin Road station (Line 8, exit 2; the stop is on the south side of Xiangyin Road east of the station) directly to Gongqing Forest Park, alighting at the Forest Park stop.
Gongqing Forest Park can also be reached via Line 8's Nenjiang Road station followed by a short taxi ride.
Taxis and ride-hailing
In practice, taxis are most useful here as a short last-leg option — for example, the brief hop from Nenjiang Road station to Gongqing Forest Park — or for trips where a bus route does not line up with your destination. For longer journeys across the city, the metro is generally the more predictable choice.
Walking
Yangpu is a workable district on foot around its main hubs. Fudan University's main campus is a 10–15 minute walk west of Wujiaochang along Handan Road; inside the front gate you will find the Mao Zedong statue and the Guanghua Building. Tongji University's main campus sits right at Tongji University station. The National Anthem Gallery, at Jingzhou Road 151, is next to exit 2 of Dalian Road station and is open Tuesday to Sunday, 09:00–11:30 and 13:30–16:00, closed Mondays, with free admission. Wanda Plaza at Wujiaochang, reached by Line 10, is the largest of Wanda's Shanghai malls and holds restaurants, a cinema and a Wal-Mart at 125 Songhu Road. For budget street food near Fudan, look for the alley off Wudong Road; after 21:30 the vendors move to Fudan's north gate.
From the airport into the city
Pudong Airport offers two practical routes into Yangpu.
- By metro: take Line 2 to Century Avenue, transfer to Line 4 across the Huangpu River into Yangpu, and transfer to Line 10 at Hailun Road. If your destination is on Line 8, it may be better to take Line 2 to People's Square and transfer directly there.
- By bus: the Airport No. 4 bus runs express from the Pudong Airport bus terminal directly to Wujiaochang, crossing the Yangpu Bridge. Depending on traffic, it may be the faster option.
If you are arriving at Hongqiao Airport, Line 10 connects directly to Yangpu, which makes it the straightforward choice.
