An orientation to Dachang

Dachang Hui Autonomous County is a small county in Hebei province, administered by Langfang and sitting in the "Northern three counties" exclave of Hebei that is wrapped around by Beijing and Tianjin. It borders Beijing to the west, with the Chaobai River separating it from Tongzhou District. The county centre is a fair distance from central Beijing, so most visitors arrive from the capital rather than treating Dachang as a standalone destination. The county administers one subdistrict (Beichen) and five towns — Dachang, Xiadian, Qigezhuang, Shaofu and Chenfu — so when planning journeys, check which town your destination is in, as they are spread across a largely rural county.

How visitors get around

Dachang has no metro or tram network of its own. Getting around locally relies on buses, taxis and ride-hailing, with walking practical for short trips in the county centre. For longer journeys, the expressway network is the backbone of road travel: the Jingping, Jingqin, Beijing–Harbin and G95 Capital Area Loop expressways all pass through the county, which makes road connections to Beijing and the wider region straightforward by car or taxi.

Rail, metro and trams

There is no urban rail, metro or tram service within Dachang. The Beijing–Tangshan intercity railway is planned to run through the county, but it was still under construction as of 2021, so visitors should not count on rail for local travel. The nearest practical rail-based option is Beijing's Subway, which reaches the edge of the capital at Lucheng; from there you continue into Dachang by road. If you are arriving by train into Beijing, you will need to transfer onto the subway or take a taxi for the final leg.

Buses and other public transport

Five passenger bus lines link Dachang to Beijing, making coach or bus a viable option for the cross-border trip. Note, however, that there is no single direct bus from central Beijing to Dachang — journeys by bus involve at least one transfer, so allow extra time and check connections in advance. Within the county, local buses serve the towns and villages, but schedules are geared to residents rather than tourists, so plan around daylight hours and confirm your return trip before setting out.

Taxis and ride-hailing

Taxis are the most flexible way to cover the last stretch into Dachang, and a direct taxi from Beijing to the county takes roughly three-quarters of an hour in normal traffic. Several Beijing taxi firms serve the route, including Beijing Beiqi Taxi, Beijing Sanyuan Taxi and Beijing Shouqi Taxi, and ride-hailing apps work in the area. Agree the fare or confirm the app price before departure, and have your destination written in Chinese, since Dachang is a county rather than a single address.

Walking

Walking is a reasonable way to get around the county centre and the built-up parts of Dachang town, where shops, services and hotels cluster. Outside the towns, the county is spread out and partly forested, with villages and farmland between settlements, so walking between towns is not practical. For anything beyond a short stroll, use a taxi or bus.

Getting from the airport into the city

Most visitors fly into Beijing Capital International Airport and continue to Dachang by road or a mix of subway and taxi. A few practical options:

Beijing Airport coaches can be reached on +86 010 96158 (bcia.com.cn), and Beijing Subway enquiries on 86-010-96165 (bjsubway.com). Buy subway tickets at station machines or counters, and pay coach fares on boarding. If you need a hotel on arrival, there are several options near Dachang, so it is worth booking ahead if you are arriving after a long journey.
