Getting Your Bearings
Xilin Hot (Xilinhot) is the administrative centre of Xilingol League in Inner Mongolia, and for most visitors it is the starting point for a trip into the surrounding grasslands. The city sits on open steppe at roughly 990 m elevation, with a compact urban core where most hotels, restaurants and services are found. The practical consequence for a visitor is simple: getting around the city itself is easy, but reaching the grasslands and scenic areas beyond it takes planning, because public transport does not serve them.
Rail
Xilingol has no high-speed rail. Xilinhot Railway Station sits on Xilin Avenue, a short drive from the downtown area, and is served by normal trains that connect the city to the national rail network. The K7917 train departs daily for Hohhot and Baotou, which are the main rail links you can use to reach or leave Xilin Hot. Journeys to Hohhot and Baotou are long overnight-style trips rather than quick hops, so treat rail as a way of getting in and out of the region rather than as a way of moving around the city.
Metro and Trams
There is no metro or tram network in Xilin Hot. Within the city, you will rely on buses, taxis and walking.
Buses and Long-Distance Coaches
Local buses serve the city itself, and long-distance buses run between the city and the surrounding banner and city centres. From Xilinhot Long-distance Bus Station you can find services to places such as West Ujumuqin, Lan Banner and East Ujumuqin, with several departures a day on each route. Schedules change, so confirm times and buy your ticket at the station rather than relying on anything you read in advance.
The key limitation to understand is that buses only connect city areas to city areas. No public transport runs to the grasslands or other scenic areas, so onward travel from a bus stop into the countryside requires a private car. If your goal is the steppe, plan for a car and driver rather than a bus connection.
Taxis and Ride-Hailing
Taxis operate within each city and banner area and are the practical way to cover short trips around Xilin Hot, including the run to and from the railway station. They are generally not used for grassland excursions: a trip out to the steppe is expensive by taxi and cars are often unavailable for that kind of journey. For anything beyond the urban area, arrange a private car instead of flagging a taxi.
Walking
The urban core of Xilin Hot is compact enough that walking works well for everyday needs, and the historic centre with its temple is a natural area to explore on foot. Keep in mind the climate: winters are long, very dry and bitterly cold, while summers are short and hot, and the temperature swing between day and night is often large. Sunshine is abundant year-round, and most of the year's rain falls in July and August. Dress and plan accordingly if you intend to spend much time outdoors.
Arriving by Air
Xilinhot Airport lies on Jichang Road, a drive of roughly half an hour from downtown. It has regular flights to Beijing on Air China and China United Airlines, and Tianjin Airlines serves it with multiple daily flights to Hohhot plus a seasonal daily flight to Tianjin. There are also occasional direct flights to other major cities. Flights to Hohhot and Beijing are short, around an hour each, which makes air the quickest way in from those cities.
Note that Holingol Airport, which has flights to and from Beijing, is not in Xilin Hot at all — it is in Tongliao City, near the Wulagai Grassland, so do not confuse the two when booking.
Arriving by Road
China National Highway 207 and China National Highway 303 both terminate in the Xilin Hot area, and the S27 Xilingol–Kalgan Expressway ends in a suburb of the city. Driving times are substantial: Beijing and Hohhot are each roughly eight hours away by car, Chifeng is around four and a half hours, and Hulunbuir is a very long haul of about fifteen hours. Road access is therefore best thought of as a way to link Xilin Hot with nearby cities rather than as a quick approach from a major hub.
Practical Summary

- Rail (the daily K7917) connects Xilin Hot to Hohhot and Baotou, but journeys are long.
- Long-distance buses link city and banner centres only — never the grasslands.
- For grassland and scenic areas, hire a private car; taxis are impractical and public transport does not go there.
- Xilinhot Airport is about half an hour from downtown and has frequent short flights to Hohhot and Beijing.
- Confirm bus and train schedules locally, as timetables change.
- Typical Xilingol itineraries run four to seven days and usually begin in Xilin Hot.
