Getting to the City
Most international and domestic travelers will arrive via Baotou Donghe Airport or by train. The airport serves as a major gateway with flights connecting to major Chinese hubs like Beijing, Shanghai, and Guangzhou, as well as some international destinations.
- From the Airport: While the airport is located near the East Railway Station, it is roughly a 4km walk to reach the station directly. For easier transport, "airport buses" (often operating as white vans) are available to take you to various locations across Baotou for a set fee. If your specific destination is the Donghe district, taking a taxi from the airport may be more cost-effective than using a shared shuttle.
- By Train: There are two primary stations serving the city. Baotou East Station serves the eastern side of the city and is near the airport, while Baotou Station serves the western portion of the urban area. High-speed rail options are available for travel within Inner Mongolia (such as to Hohhot), while overnight trains provide a slower but direct route to Beijing.
Local Transit and Mobility

- Buses: A dedicated Long Distance Bus Station serves as a hub for regional travel, providing connections to nearby cities like Hohhot and Dongsheng, as well as long-distance routes to Beijing. Local buses provide coverage across the urban districts.
- Taxis and Ride-Hailing: For more direct point-to-point travel, taxis are available throughout the city. These are particularly useful for reaching specific sites like the Badekar Monastery or the Saihantalah Grasslands Park.
Walking and Sightseeing
While the city is large, certain areas may be accessible on foot depending on your itinerary. The urban layout was historically influenced by industrial planning, meaning some areas are designed around major hubs. For major landmarks like the Olympic Sports Centre Stadium or the extensive Saihantalah Grasslands Park (a large urban park), you may find it more practical to use a taxi or bus to reach the gates of these locations before exploring them on foot.
