Getting Around Panjin: An Overview
Panjin is a compact coastal city in central Liaoning, but its sights are spread out, so visitors should expect to combine walking with buses and taxis rather than relying on any single mode. The city's attractions — the Red Seabeach, the reed marsh, the Liaohekou reserve, and the Liaohe Tablet Forest Park — sit away from the urban core, so planning transport in advance will make your trip much smoother.
Rail Connections
Panjin has two railway stations and is connected by rail to most Chinese cities. For visitors, the key distinction is location:
- Panjin Railway Station — the more convenient option, close to the city center.
- Panjin North Railway Station — located far from the city center. If you arrive here, budget roughly another hour to reach the center.
Trains from Shenyang are a common way in, with journey times ranging from about 1 hour 15 minutes on fast G trains to around 2 hours 30 minutes on slower K trains. Note that Panjin does not have a metro or tram network; rail here means intercity and regional trains rather than urban transit.
Buses and Long-Distance Coach Services
Panjin has three long-distance bus stations, and coaches serve most towns and cities across northeastern China:
- Panjin Long Distance Bus Station — right next to the railway station, making it the handiest for onward connections.
- Panjin Bus Station — in Xinlongtai District on Taishan Road.
- Liaohe Youtian Bus Station — also in Xinlongtai District, on Shuangxing Road.
For getting around within the city, local buses are one of the two main options alongside taxis. Because the sights are spread out, expect to use buses for at least part of your journey to outlying attractions.
Taxis and Ride-Hailing
Taxis are the other practical way to move around Panjin and are often the simplest choice given how dispersed the attractions are. For visitors heading to the Red Seabeach, note that organized Chinese-language day tours depart from both Shenyang and Panjin — the Panjin departure point is right at the Railway Station's Square, which can save you the trouble of arranging your own transport to the coast.
Walking
Walking is useful within the immediate area of the city center and around the railway station, but it is not a realistic way to reach Panjin's main natural attractions. The Red Seabeach, reed marsh, and Liaohekou reserve are all outside the built-up area, so plan on buses or taxis for those trips.
Getting There by Air
Panjin has no airport of its own, so air travelers arrive via one of three nearby airports and continue overland:
- Shenyang Taoxian International Airport — about 120 km away, the closest major international gateway.
- Jinzhou Xiaolingzi Airport — about 100 km away, the nearest of the three.
- Dalian Zhoushuizi International Airport — about 260 km away, the farthest option.
From any of these, you will need to complete the journey by road or rail; Shenyang Taoxian is the most common choice for international arrivals, with onward train connections from Shenyang to Panjin.
Practical Tips
- Choose trains arriving at Panjin Railway Station rather than Panjin North if you want to be close to the center.
- Use the long-distance bus station beside the railway station for coach connections to other northeastern cities.
- Consider a day tour to the Red Seabeach — departures leave from the Railway Station's Square in Panjin.
- Allow extra time if you arrive at Panjin North Railway Station, as it is well outside the city center.
