Understanding Kaiyuan's Layout
Kaiyuan (开远市) is a county-level city in central Honghe Hani and Yi Autonomous Prefecture, Yunnan. It sits on the historic Yunnan–Vietnam corridor and functions as an important regional transport hub, where modern highways and high-speed rail operate alongside a century-old metre-gauge railway. For a visitor, the most useful thing to know is that the city itself is compact, but its main high-speed rail station lies outside the traditional city center — so plan for a short transfer on arrival.
Arriving by Rail
Kaiyuan South Railway Station (开远南站) is the city's high-speed rail stop, served by the Mile–Mengzi High-Speed Railway. The line links Mile, Zhuyuan, Pengpu, Kaiyuan and Honghe Station, and connects onward to the wider high-speed network at Mile.
- Booking: When searching on China Railway 12306, enter "开远南" (Kaiyuan South) rather than "开远" — the latter will not return the correct station.
- From Kunming: Take a direct train from Kunming South Railway Station to Kaiyuan South. Alternatively, change at Mile Railway Station, or use services heading toward Honghe Railway Station that stop at Kaiyuan South.
- From Mengzi: Either take the train between Honghe Station and Kaiyuan South, or use the intercity bus.
- From Hekou (Vietnam border): Travel north by train toward Honghe Station, then connect to Kaiyuan South. Allow time for immigration and avoid tight same-day connections.
- Station to city: Kaiyuan South Station is outside the traditional city center. Reach downtown by taxi, ride-hailing, station bus, or a transfer.
Buses and Intercity Services
Kaiyuan South Bus Station (开远汽车客运南站) is the key departure point for intercity and long-distance services. Older references also mention a Kaiyuan Passenger Transport Station (开远汽车客运站) with separate north and south terminals — names and functions can change, so verify your departure point before you travel.
- Possible destinations: Mengzi, Mile, Gejiu, Jianshui, Luxi, Hekou, Yuanyang and other Honghe counties, plus selected longer routes. Not all services run daily.
- Kaiyuan–Mengzi intercity bus: Connects Kaiyuan South Bus Station with urban stops in both cities.
- Kaiyuan–Mile intercity bus: A frequent bus-style service, useful when train times don't suit you or when the stops are closer to city centers.
- Other confirmed links: Mengzi–Kaiyuan, Gejiu–Pingbian and Mile–Luxi. Some services run as conventional coaches, customized transport or shared vehicles.
- Tickets: Buy at the station, through local platforms, or via Chinese travel apps. A passport may be required. Book ahead during Spring Festival, National Day and major events.
Getting Around the City
Public buses connect residential areas, commercial districts, railway sites, parks and selected attractions. Stops display routes in Chinese, and because the city is compact, many journeys are short. Note that evening routes and frequencies may be reduced. Previously listed routes include Bus 6 for the Phoenix Ecological Park area and Bus 2 for the Nandong area, but routes are occasionally adjusted — confirm via a current navigation app.
- Taxis: Widely available. Carry your destination name in Chinese, use a licensed taxi and insist on the meter. Availability is lower late at night and during large events.
- Ride-hailing: Apps are available, but foreign visitors may need Chinese-compatible mobile payment and local or roaming data. Hotel staff can often assist.
- Walking: Well suited to the Nanzheng Street Historic and Cultural District (南正街历史文化街区), Luzhou Park (泸江公园) and the old railway neighborhoods.
- Beyond the center: Nandong and rural areas are best reached by bus, taxi or private vehicle. Rural minibuses and shared vehicles serve some villages and townships, and may depart only when full rather than on a fixed timetable.
Arriving by Air
Kaiyuan has no commercial airport. Honghe Mengzi Airport is planned but not confirmed as operating, so the main air gateway is Kunming Changshui International Airport (昆明长水国际机场). From there, the standard route is to continue to Kunming South Railway Station and take the train to Kaiyuan South. Wenshan Puzhehei Airport is a possible alternative, but the road connection is less convenient and schedules are limited.
Driving and Practical Notes
Kaiyuan is connected by the G323 and G326 national highways plus expressways toward Mile, Mengzi, Gejiu, Jianshui and Hekou. If you plan to drive, be aware that a foreign licence or International Driving Permit alone is not sufficient — you need a Chinese licence or an approved temporary Chinese driving permit.
- Use a registered rental vehicle, carry your passport and documents, and confirm insurance coverage.
- Use a Chinese navigation app and avoid unverified mountain shortcuts.
- Watch for motorcycles, agricultural vehicles and pedestrians, and never park on or near railway tracks.
- Check your rental company's policy on border counties if you plan to travel toward Hekou.
- Road conditions vary: mountain terrain around Gejiu brings bends and elevation changes, so take care in rain or fog, and check weather and road maintenance on the Hekou corridor.
