Getting from the Airport
Dalian Zhoushuizi International Airport is located northwest of the city center and features a simple layout with a single terminal. Travelers have several ways to reach the heart of the city from the airport:
- Metro: Dalian metro line 2 provides a direct connection from the airport to key areas, including the harbor and Zhongshan Square.
- Bus: A regular airport bus service operates after every flight landing. This bus travels to Renmin Lu and the main train station (note that it also stops at the smaller Shahekou station).
- Taxi: Taxis are available at an official queue located on the east side of the airport ground floor, near the glass doors. It is recommended to use these official queues rather than seeking out drivers outside of the designated area.
Rail and Metro Networks
Dalian features a robust rail infrastructure for both local and regional travel. The city's metro system connects major hubs, including the main train station and various urban centers.
- Main Train Station: Located in the Zhongshan District, this hub serves domestic trains to Beijing and most cities in the Dongbei region. High-speed "D" trains are also available here for travel to Beijing, Shenyang, and Harbin.
- Dalian North Train Station: This station is a primary hub for high-speed rail services connecting Dalian to major cities like Beijing, Shanghai, Shenyang, Changchun, Harbin, and Dandong. It is connected to the city via metro line 1 and several bus lines.
Buses and Ferries
Public buses provide extensive coverage throughout the metropolitan area, while ferry services offer unique transit options across the water.
- Local and Long-Distance Buses: Various bus stations serve different needs; for example, a major long-distance station is located near the main train station. Smaller stations are available near the passenger ferry terminal and in the Shahekou District to serve local destinations.
- Ferry Services: A dedicated terminal in the Zhongshan District provides transport to cities along the Yellow Sea. These include fast ferries to Yantai (with travel times ranging from 3 to 12 hours) and other domestic routes. Tickets can be purchased at the ferry terminal or at a kiosk located at the train station.
Taxis and Ride-Hailing
Taxis are plentiful throughout Dalian, though their availability may decrease during rush hour or in more remote areas of the city. To ensure a reliable experience, travelers should keep the following in mind:
- Identification: Look for taxis with blue or white lights on top, as these indicate higher ratings. Avoid vehicles without clear markings to minimize the risk of encountering illegal transport.
- Communication: Most drivers do not speak English. It is helpful to have a specific destination ready to ensure you reach the correct location.
- Payment and Etiquette: Drivers typically round fares to the nearest whole yuan (¥1). While tipping is not expected, it is advisable to ask for a receipt after your journey.
Walkability
Dalian is a compact city, making it easy to walk between various points of interest. However, pedestrians should remain aware of their surroundings:
- Surface Conditions: Be cautious on streets in the morning when dew and dust can make surfaces slick. Additionally, some areas feature polished tiles that become very slippery when wet or covered in snow.
- Urban Obstacles: Watch for uneven pavement, missing utility covers, and low-hanging items like clotheslines, which can be harder to spot at night.
