For a faster journey to the downtown area, there is a high-speed rail connection via the Wuxu Airport (Jichang) Railway Station. This rail link provides direct access to Nanning's central stations in approximately 16 minutes, with tickets typically costing around ¥16 for a second-class seat.
Alternatively, taxis and ride-hailing services operate from the airport. While ride-hailing is generally the more economical choice, a taxi to the urban area typically costs between ¥100 and ¥130. Note that some taxi drivers may prefer not to use the meter, though their set prices are generally comparable to metered fares.
Navigating the City by Rail
Nanning features several major railway stations, each serving different purposes and regions:
- Nanning East Railway Station: This is the city's largest station and the primary hub for high-speed trains. It offers extensive amenities including food, retail, and vending machines.
- Nanning Railway Station: A more traditional station located near the old downtown area. It serves as a major junction for various regional lines and some high-speed trains heading west.
- Nanning North Railway Station: Located further north of the city center, this station primarily serves the Wuming District and the Nanning ASEAN Development Zone.
- Nanning West Railway Station: This station serves a more localized area to the west of the city center.
Metro and Public Transit
The Nanning Rail Transit (NNRT) is an efficient way to move around the city, with most points of interest located within walking distance of a station. The system currently features several lines; for example, Line 1 runs west to east along the Yongjiang River, providing easy access to commercial areas and tourist spots. Most stations feature bilingual signs in Chinese and English.
To ride the metro, you can purchase tickets from vending machines at the station using small denominations of cash. Alternatively, using a Nanning Citizen Card via WeChat or Alipay can provide a 10% discount on fares. Please note that security checks are standard at all metro entrances.
For regional travel beyond the city limits, Nanning features several major bus terminals (such as Langdong, Xixiangtang, Anji, Jiangnan, and Jinqiao). These hubs serve various neighboring cities and provinces. Additionally, a dedicated coach station at the south square of Nanning East Railway Station provides specific tourist routes to local landmarks like Detian Waterfall and Qingxiu Mountain.
Local Transport and Walkability
For shorter trips within the city, local buses are an affordable option, typically costing between ¥1 and ¥2 depending on whether the bus is equipped with air conditioning. Taxis are also widely available for local travel; most trips within the city center should cost under ¥20, with base fares starting at ¥9 for the first 2 kilometers.
For those preferring flexible movement, the city offers shared bikes, e-bikes, and shared cars. Many areas of interest are well-situated near transit hubs, making the city navigable for visitors using a combination of walking and public transport.
