Getting Around Hechi: An Overview
Hechi is a prefecture-level city in northwestern Guangxi, spread across mountainous terrain on the southern edge of the Yunnan–Guizhou Plateau. It is made up of two urban districts — Jinchengjiang and Yizhou — plus a number of counties and autonomous counties. Because the city covers a large, hilly area, getting around is mostly a matter of choosing the right mode for the distance: local buses and taxis for movement within a district, and rail or long-distance buses for trips between districts and to other cities.
Buses and Local Public Transport
Buses are the main way visitors move around Hechi itself. They are cheap and practical, and the network is broad enough to reach most places you are likely to want to go within the city.
- Fares are ¥2 per ride.
- Buses can generally take you anywhere around the city, making them a good default option for short trips.
- There is no metro or tram system in Hechi, so buses, taxis and ride-hailing cover local journeys.
Rail
Hechi has a railway station served by the Guizhou–Guangxi Railway. Rail is the most convenient option for arriving from elsewhere in Guangxi and for longer regional trips.
- High-speed rail connects Guilin to Hechi in about 1.5 hours.
- The high-speed railway in Hechi connects many cities within Guangxi Province, so onward travel is straightforward.
- Regular trains also run from other Guangxi cities such as Nanning and Liuzhou.
Taxis and Ride-Hailing
Local taxis operate in Hechi, and ride-hailing apps are available as well — Didi Dache (滴滴打车) is the one specifically noted for the city. For visitors without a car, taxis and ride-hailing are useful for trips that buses do not cover conveniently, or when you are carrying luggage.
Walkability
Hechi is very mountainous, and the city's districts and settlements are spread over a large area. Walking is fine for getting around within a neighbourhood or district centre, but it is not a realistic way to cover the city as a whole. Plan on combining walking with buses or taxis for anything beyond a short local stroll.
Getting There: Air, Rail, Road and Bus
Hechi Jinchengjiang Airport (IATA: HCJ) is listed for the city, but travel guidance for visitors notes that Hechi does not have its own airport in practical terms and that the nearest major airport is Guilin Liangjiang International Airport, roughly 150 kilometres away. From Guilin you can reach Hechi by long-distance bus, train, taxi or car, with the journey taking about 2–3 hours.
- By train: High-speed rail from Guilin to Hechi takes about 1.5 hours, and regular trains connect Hechi with other Guangxi cities including Nanning and Liuzhou.
- By long-distance bus: Hechi has many long-distance bus stations connecting cities both inside and outside Guangxi. Direct buses run from Nanning, Guilin, Liuzhou and other places.
- By car: If you are driving yourself from Nanning, Liuzhou, Guilin or elsewhere, expressways such as the Liuhe Expressway and Guihe Expressway lead to Hechi; the drive takes roughly 2–4 hours depending on where you start.
- From Yizhou: Yizhou is about 50 kilometres from the centre of Hechi and can be reached by highway or public transportation.
- From Guizhou: Hechi lies close to Guizhou Province to the north, and you can reach it by road from Duyun and other Guizhou cities.
Practical Tips for Visitors
- Keep small change or a payment app ready for the ¥2 bus fare.
- For intercity legs, rail is usually the quickest and simplest option; long-distance buses fill in the places trains do not serve directly.
- If you are flying in, plan your onward connection from Guilin rather than expecting to land in Hechi itself.
- Because the city is mountainous and spread out, allow extra time for any journey that crosses between districts.
