Orientation: A Sprawling Prefecture, a Compact Core
Jiuquan is a prefecture-level city covering an enormous stretch of northwestern Gansu, but for the visitor the practical city is its built-up core in Suzhou District. The district sits at roughly 1,500 meters above sea level, so allow yourself a little time to adjust. Because the administrative area is so vast, always check whether a given destination lies in the urban core or far out in the prefecture before you plan your day.
Arriving by Train
Jiuquan has two railway stations, and which one you use depends on the type of train you are taking.
- Jiuquan Railway Station (on Jiefang Road in Xidong Town, Suzhou District) serves regular-speed trains. It is reachable on local bus no. 19.
- Jiuquan South Railway Station (on Gaotie East Road, Suzhou District) serves high-speed trains. It is reachable on local bus no. 25.
The city lies on the Lanzhou–Xinjiang (Lanxin) Railway, the main line through the region, which also has several side branches within the prefecture. One branch runs from Liugou Station in Guazhou County to Dunhuang, serving both the Guazhou county seat and Dunhuang. Another, the Jiayuguan–Ceke branch, runs through the desert areas of Jinta County. A planned extension, the Golmud–Dunhuang Railway, would eventually link Dunhuang south to Golmud in Qinghai.
Arriving by Long-Distance Bus
Jiuquan's main bus station is at 47 Xiguan Road in Suzhou District, and it is well served by local buses (nos. 1, 3, 5, 9, 12, 21, 22, 25, and both the Inner and Outer Circle of no. 27). The station can be reached by phone at +86 937 2603103.

To reach Jiuquan from the airport, the most convenient approach is to connect through Jiayuguan: the local bus between Jiayuguan and Jiuquan takes about 20 minutes, so a taxi or bus to Jiayuguan followed by that connection is a workable route into the city.
