Getting Your Bearings

Puyang is a prefecture-level city in northeastern Henan, sitting on the northern shore of the Yellow River. The urban core is centred on Hualong District, which is largely conurbated with Puyang County and Qingfeng County. For a visitor, that means most of the sights, hotels and transport hubs you'll use sit within a fairly compact built-up area, and the city's bus network is the main way of knitting it together.

Arriving by Rail

Puyang East Railway Station is the city's principal rail gateway and doubles as a transport hub: taxis are readily available there, and city bus routes cluster around the main station and the major commercial centres. If you arrive by train, you can expect to step straight into a taxi queue or onto a local bus without needing to cross town first.

Buses

Puyang has an extensive city bus network covering most urban areas and linking the main attractions and districts. For most visitors, buses will be the workhorse of getting around.

For longer trips within the region, Puyang Dongpu Bus Station on Shengli East Road in Hualong District is the long-distance coach terminal. It is open daily from 06:00 to 18:30, takes reservations up to seven days in advance, and tickets can be collected at any ticket window. The station is served by local bus routes 1, 6, 15, 23 and 29. Note that the station telephone line is staffed in Chinese only.

Taxis and Ride-Hailing

Licensed taxis are brightly coloured with a roof sign and a meter, and can be hailed on the street or picked up at designated stands. The starting fare is typically ¥5–8, after which the meter runs. Payment is by cash or mobile (WeChat Pay/Alipay).

DiDi Chuxing is the dominant ride-hailing app, offering both Express services and taxi-hailing, with payment through a linked WeChat Pay or Alipay account. Taxis are easy to find at Puyang East Railway Station and at the major long-distance bus stations.

As anywhere, be cautious with unmarked cars, especially at night, and confirm that the meter is running or that the DiDi fare is agreed before you set off.

Cycling and Walking

Dockless shared bikes from HelloBike and Meituan Bike are available and are unlocked through their WeChat or Alipay mini-programs; you'll need a deposit plus a per-ride fee. Dedicated bike lanes are common on many roads, but the major arterial roads carry heavy traffic and are less safe for cyclists and pedestrians. For relaxed walking, head to the city's parks and squares — Qicheng Park and Dragon City Square are particularly pedestrian-friendly. Elsewhere, expect to use buses or taxis for longer hops rather than strolling across the city.

Car Rental

Renting a car requires a Chinese driving licence or a temporary Chinese permit, which is difficult for short-term visitors to obtain. Motorcycle and scooter rental is uncommon for tourists and not advisable without a local licence. For most visitors, then, self-driving is not a practical option and the bus, taxi and ride-hailing network is the realistic way to get around.
