Orientation: How the City Is Laid Out

Pingdingshan is a prefecture-level city in central Henan province, also known as Eagle City. For a visitor, the practical heart of the city is compact: the most important roads in town are Guangming Road (光明路), Jianshe Road (建设路), Zhongxing Road (中兴路) and Kuanggong Road (矿工路). Together these form roughly a trapezoid around the northwestern part of the city, and most city life sits within that area. Because the city is small, almost any destination is reachable by taxi, and cycling is a realistic option too.

Rail: Two Stations, Two Very Different Locations

Pingdingshan has two main railway stations, and knowing which one you need matters a great deal:

Both stations can be reached on the same enquiry line, +86 375 12306. If you are arriving by high-speed rail, budget for that taxi transfer rather than assuming you will step out into the middle of the city.

Airport Access: You Will Arrive via Zhengzhou

Pingdingshan City does not have its own airport. Visitors fly into Zhengzhou Airport instead, and from there you have two straightforward options into Pingdingshan:

Both are practical; the bus saves you a change of mode, while the train is the faster of the two.

Buses

Local buses are simple to use once you grasp the logic of the street plan: if you catch a bus, imagine it running straight down the road you are standing on. Fares are cheap — a longer cross-city route, for example, costs ¥1.

For longer journeys there is a long-distance bus station on the middle section of Miner Road (reachable on +86 375 3925970), with nearby transport hubs including Yingcheng Bus Station and Pingdingshan West Station. Note that the address is given in two official forms — "No. 13 Miner Road Middle Section" and "No. 160 Miner Road" — so it is worth confirming which you are heading for.

Within the centre, there is a bus station just north of the train station on Zhongxing Road, and another on East Kuanggong Road just east of Xinhua Road.

Taxis and Ride-Hailing

Taxis are the easiest way to get around. The meter starts at ¥6 and is based on both distance travelled and time taken. If your phone has a SIM card and internet access, you can book a taxi through an app such as Didi, which might even be cheaper. Because Pingdingshan is a small city, you can easily reach any part of it by taxi.

Cycling and Shared Bikes

Since Pingdingshan is a small city, cycling is a genuinely pleasant way to get around, and there are many shared bikes available — a good way to enjoy the lakeside scenery by White Turtle Lake. To use the shared bicycles you will need to download the Alipay app. Mobile payments are very common in China, so downloading and registering Alipay is convenient for your travels in the country more generally. A shared bicycle ride costs approximately ¥3.

Walking

The concentration of city life inside the trapezoid formed by Guangming, Jianshe, Zhongxing and Kuanggong roads means that once you are in the centre, walking between nearby sights, shops and restaurants is reasonable. For anything outside that core, or for the transfer to and from Pingdingshan West, plan on a taxi or a bus rather than your feet.
