Getting your bearings
Luohe is a prefecture-level city in central Henan, sitting where the Sha and Li rivers meet. The urban core is compact and spread across the Yancheng, Shaoling and Yuanhui districts, with two counties — Wuyang and Linying — stretching out beyond it. For a visitor, that geography matters: most of the sights you'll want to see are in or near the built-up city and easy to reach, while a few (the Jiahu Site in Wuyang County, Xiaoshang Bridge in Linying County) sit further out and need more planning.
Buses: the workhorse of local travel
City buses are the simplest and cheapest way to get around, and they connect the main visitor attractions. Fares are nominal — a flat CNY 1 on routes serving sights such as Xu Shen Cultural Park. You pay on board, and the newer vehicles are equipped with IC card readers, so a stored-value transit card works if you have one; otherwise cash in small notes is the practical fallback.
- Xu Shen Cultural Park: Bus 101 or 105, alighting at Xu Shen Cultural Park Station.
- Shenzhou Bird Park: Bus 100 runs directly to Shenzhou Bird Park Station; several other routes also serve the park.
- Holidays: extra special tourism lines are added to popular attractions during peak periods, so check locally when you arrive.
The fleet itself has been steadily upgraded toward new energy: compressed natural gas buses, gas-electric hybrids and full-electric buses now make up much of the service. The electric buses are quiet and air-conditioned, with USB charging ports, and are scheduled by GPS — useful to know if you're waiting at a stop and wondering whether the next bus is close.
Note that public shuttle services to outlying sites such as the Jiahu Site are infrequent. If those are on your list, plan around a charter or a car rather than relying on scheduled buses.
Rail: arriving and departing
Luohe's main external rail gateway for visitors is Luohe West Station, served by high-speed trains. It sits outside the immediate city centre — roughly a 15-minute taxi ride to the centre — so budget a short cab hop at either end of your journey. Buy high-speed rail tickets through the usual Chinese rail channels (station counters or the official booking app), and allow time at the station for security and ID checks, as is standard on the Chinese rail network.
Taxis and ride-hailing
Taxis are plentiful enough for short hops between city attractions, typically costing CNY 10–20 for a cross-town trip. For longer excursions into the counties, taxis and ride-hailing give way to charter arrangements: a round-trip charter to Linying runs around CNY 260, and self-driving or chartering is the recommended approach for county-level sites like Xiaoshang Bridge and the Jiahu Site. Agree the fare and waiting time with the driver before setting off on a charter.
Walking and cycling
The central districts are manageable on foot for short errands and neighbourhood exploring, and the riverside is the city's best walking ground. The Sha-Li River Scenic Area is a free ecological corridor where the Sha and Li rivers converge, and it's well suited to a leisurely stroll. Bicycle rental there costs around CNY 20 per hour, and kayaking is available at roughly CNY 50 per hour — a pleasant way to cover more of the corridor than you would on foot.
Getting in from the airport
In practice, most visitors reach Luohe by high-speed rail, arriving at Luohe West Station and continuing by taxi to the centre. If you are flying in, confirm your arrival airport and onward connection before you travel, and treat the rail-plus-taxi combination as your reliable default.
Practical tips
- Carry small cash for bus fares and keep a transit card if you'll be riding often.
- Check opening days: Xu Shen Cultural Park and the Jiahu Site Museum are both closed Mondays, and the Jiahu museum requires a real-name reservation.
- Summers are hot — bring sun and heat protection — and winters are relatively cold, so dress accordingly.
- Henan food here leans spicy, but spiciness can usually be adjusted if you ask.
- For county sights, arrange a charter in advance rather than hoping for a convenient shuttle.
