Getting Around Jiyuan
Jiyuan is a sub-prefecture-level city in northwestern Henan, bordering Jiaozuo and Luoyang as well as Shanxi province to the north. It is not a large metropolis, and its transport network is correspondingly simple: public buses, taxis, ride-hailing, and shared bicycles cover most visitor needs within the city, while regional trains and long-distance coaches handle the connections to the surrounding hubs. The practical notes below focus on how these pieces fit together.
Local Public Transport: Buses
City buses are the main public transport option inside Jiyuan. They cover the town and nearby suburbs, and fares are low. The catch is that routes and frequencies can be irregular, so the most useful thing you can do is ask your hotel staff which lines serve the places you want to reach.

- The network reaches the town centre and surrounding suburbs.
- Schedules and frequencies are not always predictable — confirm locally rather than relying on a map alone.
- From Jiyuan's bus and rail stations, the last leg into town is typically by local taxi or city bus.
Rail: Stations and Connections
Jiyuan has two railway stations: Jiyuan Station and Jiyuan High-speed Railway East Station. Together they offer direct connections to Zhengzhou, Xi'an, Luoyang, and other cities. The Houma–Yueshan Railway and the Jiaozuo–Liuzhou Railway also pass through the area.
For a visitor, the rail network is best thought of as two tiers. High-speed and conventional regional services to hubs such as Zhengzhou and Jiaozuo are the most reliable way to approach Jiyuan; from those hubs you transfer onward by regional train or a short bus or taxi ride. Trains are generally punctual and comfortable, and booking ahead is wise around holidays. Regional and fast conventional trains from Zhengzhou or Jiaozuo to the Jiyuan area take somewhere in the range of half an hour to an hour and a half and usually cost only a low tens-of-yuan fare.
Long-Distance and Intercity Buses
Jiyuan Bus Station handles both local buses and long-distance coaches, and there are night food stalls nearby. Frequent coaches run from Zhengzhou, Jiaozuo, Luoyang, and smaller county towns into Jiyuan, arriving at the main long-distance bus station.
- Intercity coaches are cheaper than taxis but slower and less comfortable than high-speed rail.
- They are a reasonable choice if your origin has no convenient train connection.
- If you are coming from a major hub, the train-plus-transfer combination is usually the more dependable option.
Taxis and Ride-Hailing
Taxis and app-based ride-hailing (Didi) are the fastest door-to-door option in Jiyuan, and they are especially handy for station transfers. Fares combine a base charge with a per-kilometre rate: short trips around the city are affordable, while long intercity taxi rides get expensive quickly.
- Use taxis or ride-hailing for the last mile from the bus or rail station.
- Cashless payment via WeChat Pay and Alipay is widely accepted in taxis and shops.
- For long distances, compare the taxi price against a train or coach before committing.
Shared Bikes and E-Bikes
Shared bicycles and e-bikes are common in Jiyuan and are a cheap way to cover short distances, typically costing a small amount per half hour. They suit flat, short hops around the town centre rather than long cross-city journeys.
Walkability
Jiyuan's downtown area, centred on People's Square, is compact enough to explore on foot, with supermarkets and pharmacies in the vicinity. Walking works well for local errands and meals; for anything beyond the central area, expect to combine walking with a bus, taxi, or shared bike. Note that the city is generally safe, with traffic and occasional petty theft being the main urban risks to keep in mind.
Special Tourist Transport
For travel between scenic spots, special tourist buses or chartered vehicles are available. If your itinerary centres on outlying attractions rather than the city itself, this is worth arranging rather than trying to piece together regular city buses.
Getting There from the Airport
Jiyuan has no airport of its own. The nearest major gateway is Zhengzhou Xinzheng International Airport, the main international airport for Henan, roughly a two-hour drive from Jiyuan. A smaller regional option is Luoyang Beijiao Airport, west of Jiyuan.
From Zhengzhou Xinzheng International Airport:
- An airport shuttle bus runs to Zhengzhou city, taking roughly forty minutes to an hour.
- A metro connection (Line 2 / airport express) reaches the Zhengzhou East railway area in around half an hour to forty minutes, for a low fare.
- From Zhengzhou, continue to Jiyuan by train or intercity bus. Total travel time is typically in the range of an hour and a half to two and a half hours depending on connections.
From Luoyang Beijiao Airport:
- Take a shuttle or taxi into Luoyang city (the shuttle takes roughly half an hour to fifty minutes), then a regional bus or train toward Jiaozuo or Zhengzhou with onward connections to Jiyuan.
- Alternatively, a direct taxi from Luoyang airport to Jiyuan takes about an hour to an hour and a half depending on traffic, at a considerably higher cost.
Practical Tips
- Carry your passport — it is required for hotel check-ins.
- Mobile coverage on China Mobile and China Unicom is decent.
- Cashless payment is the norm; set up WeChat Pay or Alipay before you arrive.
- The most comfortable seasons for getting around on foot and by bike are spring (April–May) and autumn (September–October). Summers are hot, humid, and prone to monsoon rains that can flood streets; winters are cold and dry.
- Avoid photographing industrial sites, and visit local markets early in the day.
