Getting from Xining Airport to the City
Xining Caojiabao Airport is located approximately 15 kilometers south-southeast of the city center. For travelers arriving by plane, the most convenient way to reach the city is via a dedicated airport bus. This service runs at regular intervals and connects the airport directly to the long-distance bus station located next to the main train station. The ride typically takes about 30 minutes. A return bus stand is conveniently located right in front of the airport exit door, and the fare for this shuttle is ¥21.
Rail and Long-Distance Travel
Xining serves as a major transportation hub, featuring both high-speed and conventional rail networks. The Xining Railway Station provides extensive connections to various destinations across Northwest China and the rest of the country. Notably, it marks the starting point of the Qinghai–Tibet railway. Because ticket lines can be very long, it is recommended that travelers arrive well in advance when purchasing or picking up tickets.
For those traveling by bus, there are two primary hubs located near the train station: a local bus depot and a long-distance bus station. The long-distance station features a Tourism Information Desk to assist travelers; however, visitors should be aware that staff may not speak English. While many regional routes operate throughout the day, some specific routes (such as those from Yushu) may terminate at different locations, so it is advisable to confirm the final stop with the driver.

A particularly useful route for tourists is bus #1, which travels through the center of town along Dajie and connects to the train and bus stations. One practical advantage of the local bus system is the flat fare structure: all fares are ¥1 regardless of the distance traveled.

Taxis are an available option for navigating the city. These vehicles operate on a meter with a standard flagfall of ¥8. While the meter is the standard method of payment, some drivers may be open to negotiating the fare, particularly during late-night hours.
