Orientation
Qiaotou (桥头, literally "Bridgehead") is a small town on the main road between Lijiang and Shangri-La, and it serves as the entrance point and transport hub for the Upper Tiger Leaping Gorge and the starting point of the High Trail. It is a village-scale place rather than a city, so getting around is mostly a matter of walking short distances and catching buses or minivans on the main road. Services inside the gorge are more limited than in Lijiang, so plan your onward transport and accommodation in advance.
Rail, Metro and Trams
Qiaotou has no rail, metro or tram network of its own. The nearest rail access is at Lijiang: from Lijiang's train station you can reach the main bus station by taxi for around ¥15, while the public bus requires a transfer. From there, buses continue to Qiaotou. Be wary of private minivans waiting at the train station that offer direct trips to Qiaotou at ¥400–500 — these are best avoided.
Buses and Minivans
Shuttle buses and passenger minibuses are the main way in and out of Qiaotou. Schedules are limited and vary with season, passenger demand, holidays and local operating arrangements, so treat any timetable as a reference rather than a guarantee.
- From Lijiang: Morning minibuses run from Lijiang Passenger Station (on Kangzhong Road) to Qiaotou, with reference departures at 08:30 and 13:30 and fares of roughly ¥20. Services to Tiger Leaping Gorge itself run in the morning, with fares of about ¥20–23. A morning departure is more practical if you plan to start the High Trail, as it gives you more daylight.
- Buying tickets: Intercity bus tickets use real-name registration — carry the passport you booked with. Tickets can be booked up to 15 days ahead through the official WeChat account 丽江交运 (Lijiang Transport), with 3–5 days ahead recommended, especially on weekends, holidays and in peak season; online purchase is possible up to about 30 minutes before departure, subject to seats. Foreign travellers enter passport details as required. Third-party platforms such as Ctrip, Qunar and Fliggy may show different schedules, and you can also buy in person at Lijiang Passenger Station. A phone inquiry line is 0877-96096, though you should verify the number is still current before relying on it.
- Know your stop: Qiaotou Town, Upper Tiger Leaping Gorge, Middle Tiger Leaping Gorge and Tiger Leaping Gorge Town are distinct locations, and buses may stop at a main-road junction or designated point rather than at a specific guesthouse. If you are staying at Tina's Guesthouse or similar, contact the accommodation about drop-off and local transfer. Also buy a ticket to Qiaotou specifically rather than "Tiger Leaping Gorge," which overshoots the trail start.
- Onward from Qiaotou: Local buses run to Shangri-La roughly every 20 minutes, taking about 2 hours for around ¥35. Buses from Shangri-La to Dali can be flagged on the main road — around ¥80 and about 4 hours — stopping near the Hui (Muslim) restaurant at the main cross in the south part of the village; be there before 2 PM. A full minivan from Qiaotou to Shangri-La costs around ¥200 for about 2 hours, and to Lijiang ¥25–30 per person.
- From Dali: Take a Shangri-La-bound bus via the old road through Jianchuan (5–6 hours; ¥50, or ¥70 full fare if buses are full), with several morning departures and the last around noon.
- Around the gorge: Minivans cover the 45-minute trip between the gorge ends for about ¥120 per van, though drivers may ask more. To catch onward transport after hiking, reach Tina's Guesthouse before 5 PM for arranged minivans back to Qiaotou (¥60–80 per person).
Taxis and Ride-Hailing
The practical alternatives are the scheduled buses and minivans above, plus private transfers. Private vehicles from Lijiang to Qiaotou or Middle Tiger Leaping Gorge offer flexible departure times and destinations, subject to road and access conditions, and can be combined with Baishuitai and Shangri-La — useful for families, small groups and travellers with large packs. Taxis are mainly relevant at Lijiang, where a taxi between the train station and the main bus station costs around ¥15.
Walking
Walking is how you get around Qiaotou itself — the village is compact, and the main road and main cross are the reference points for finding buses. The area's real walking is the gorge: the High Trail starts here, and hikers can walk from Walnut Garden down the low road past Sanba village to the Daju ferry pier in about 3 hours, asking locals for "Daju."
Airport Connections
The documented approach is overland via Lijiang: reach Lijiang, get to Lijiang Passenger Station (a taxi from the train station costs around ¥15, or take a public bus with a transfer), and catch a morning minibus to Qiaotou. Book your bus ticket in advance through the 丽江交运 WeChat account or a third-party platform, and allow generous time — mountain roads are subject to weather, traffic and maintenance delays, so avoid tight connections.
Practical Tips
- Check return schedules before leaving Lijiang; evening services may be limited.
- Confirm the exact drop-off point with your guesthouse, as buses may not stop at individual accommodation.
- Carry your passport for real-name bus ticketing.
- Arrange accommodation and onward transport before heading into the gorge, where services are more limited.
