Getting Around Yancheng
Yancheng is a prefecture-level city on Jiangsu's eastern coast, and its built-up core is made up of the Tinghu and Yandu districts. For a visitor, getting around is straightforward: the city has a broad public bus network, a bus rapid transit (BRT) corridor, a modern tram-style line, plentiful taxis and ride-hailing, and shared bikes for short hops. The sections below cover each option in turn, plus how to reach the city from its airport.
Public Buses and BRT
Yancheng has an extensive city bus system that covers most areas and attractions, and buses are affordable and convenient for local travel. On top of the ordinary routes, the city operates a BRT (bus rapid transit) system that runs on a dedicated bus lane. The BRT is a useful spine for cross-town trips because its vehicles are separated from general traffic.
- Ordinary city buses are the workhorse of local transport and reach most parts of the city.
- The BRT system uses a dedicated bus lane, so it can move faster than regular traffic along its corridor.
- Yancheng City Public Transport Company also runs a B3 line that shares the same route as the SRT line during its trial operation.
Trams and the SRT Line
Yancheng's rail-based urban transit is the Yancheng District SRT Line 1, which opened for trial operation in April 2021 after testing began the previous month. It uses the Autonomous Rail Rapid Transit (ART) system — guided vehicles running on a fixed route rather than conventional steel rails — with four-segment vehicles. For a visitor this functions much like a tram or light-rail line: a fixed, easy-to-follow route through the city that you can board without needing to understand the bus network.
- Look for the SRT Line 1 as a simple, fixed-route option for getting across town.
- Because the B3 bus line runs on the same route during trial operation, you may find buses and SRT vehicles serving the same corridor.
Rail Connections
Yancheng Station sits in the center of the city, so arriving by train puts you directly in the urban core rather than on the outskirts. The Xinyi–Changxing Railway runs through the city, and there are direct trains from Shanghai and Hangzhou to Yancheng. If you are coming from either of those cities, the train is a convenient way to arrive without needing a transfer from a distant station.
Taxis and Ride-Hailing
Taxis are widely available in Yancheng, and ride-hailing apps such as Didi are commonly used for getting around. Fares are relatively inexpensive compared with larger Chinese cities, which makes taxis and ride-hailing a practical choice for point-to-point trips, especially when carrying luggage or travelling to a specific address. For most visitors, hailing a car through an app is the simplest option if you don't read Chinese, since you can enter your destination in the app rather than explaining it to a driver.
Walking and Shared Bikes
Central Yancheng is compact enough that walking works well for short errands and for exploring a single neighbourhood or food street. For slightly longer trips, bike-sharing services such as Mobike and Hellobike are available throughout the city, making it easy to explore at a leisurely pace. Shared bikes are a good complement to the bus and SRT networks: ride to a stop or station, then continue by transit.
- Walk for short distances within a district or along a commercial street.
- Use shared bikes for medium distances where you don't want to wait for a bus.
- Combine bikes with buses or the SRT for longer cross-city journeys.
Arriving by Air: Yancheng Nanyang International Airport
Yancheng Nanyang International Airport (YNZ) is the city's main airport and lies roughly 15 km from the city center. It receives flights from several domestic destinations, including Beijing, Shanghai, and Guangzhou, as well as a few international destinations such as Seoul and Taipei. The airport also has direct connections to Hong Kong, Taiwan, South Korea, and Japan.
For transfers into the city, taxis and buses are available at the airport. In practice this means you have two straightforward choices on arrival:
- Taxi or ride-hailing: the most direct option, taking you door-to-door to your hotel in the city center.
- Airport bus: a cheaper option that connects the airport with the city; check the current route and stops on arrival, as airport bus services can change.
Arriving by Long-Distance Bus or Car
Yancheng's long-distance bus stations provide services from surrounding cities in Jiangsu Province and neighbouring provinces, and buses are a cost-effective way to travel between cities. If you are driving yourself, Yancheng is well connected by expressways, including the G15 Shenyang–Haikou Expressway, the G1515 Yancheng–Jingjiang Expressway, and the G1516 Yancheng–Luoyang Expressway, along with China National Highway 204. The city is about a three-hour drive from Nanjing and about four hours from Shanghai, making it reachable by road from major cities in the region.
Practical Tips
- For everyday movement, the bus network plus the SRT Line 1 will get you to most places; taxis and ride-hailing fill the gaps.
- Ride-hailing apps are widely used and fares are relatively cheap, so they are a reliable fallback when you don't know the bus routes.
- Shared bikes are plentiful and a pleasant way to cover short to medium distances.
- If you arrive by train, you land at Yancheng Station in the city center, which makes onward travel simple.
- From the airport, decide between a taxi for convenience and an airport bus for cost, and confirm the bus route on arrival.
