Getting Around Xinyi

Xinyi, China

By the Travel Wiki editorial team

First, a note on which Xinyi you mean

"Xinyi" is a romanization shared by several different places in China, so the practical details of getting around depend entirely on which one you are visiting. The best-known are Xinyi, a county-level city in Xuzhou, Jiangsu, and Xinyi, a county-level city in Maoming, Guangdong. There are also smaller places bearing the name, such as a town in Yanzhou District, Jining, Shandong, and a town in Lishi District, Lüliang, Shanxi. Before you plan local transport, confirm the province and city of your destination — the guidance below is general and should be checked against local information on arrival.

Getting around the city

For a visitor, the practical way to move around a Chinese county-level city is a mix of local buses, taxis and ride-hailing apps, and walking for short trips. Rail, metro and tram services are not something you should count on in a city of this size; where they exist at all, they are typically intercity rail connections rather than an urban metro network. Plan your days around buses and taxis, and treat any rail station as a way in and out of the area rather than as a way to get across town.

Rail, metro and trams

Xinyi, Jiangsu, has a railway station (Xinyi railway station), which is the relevant rail access point for that city. Beyond that, do not assume an urban metro or tram system: these are features of China's largest cities, and a visitor to a county-level city should expect to rely on buses and road transport for local journeys. If you are arriving by train, arrange a taxi or local bus from the station to your accommodation rather than expecting onward metro connections.

Buses and other public transport

City buses are the main form of public transport for local trips. A few practical points grounded in how Chinese urban bus services are run:

Pay your fare on board; in Chinese cities this is usually a flat fare collected by cash or by tapping a transport card or mobile payment. Ask at your hotel or the bus station about a local transport card if you plan to use buses frequently.

Taxis and ride-hailing

Taxis and ride-hailing apps are the most flexible option for a visitor, especially for trips that buses do not cover conveniently or for arriving and departing at odd hours. Ride-hailing has become a major competitor to buses across China, so you should find app-based car services widely available. Have your destination written in Chinese characters to show the driver, and confirm the fare or meter at the start of the trip.

Walking

Walking is practical for short trips within a town centre — to shops, restaurants and nearby sights — but a county-level city is generally spread out, so expect to combine walking with buses or taxis for anything beyond a few blocks. Wear comfortable shoes and use main roads and crossings, as signage in English may be limited.

Getting in from the airport

County-level cities like Xinyi generally do not have their own commercial airport. The realistic pattern is to fly into the nearest major airport serving the wider region — for Xinyi, Jiangsu, that means an airport in the Xuzhou area; for Xinyi, Guangdong, an airport serving the Maoming region — and then continue by intercity train, long-distance bus or taxi. Because airport options and connections vary and change, confirm the nearest airport and the onward transport before you book. Once you reach the local railway station or bus station, take a taxi or city bus to your final destination.
