Getting Around Suzhou
Suzhou offers multiple options for visitors to move around the city, including metro, buses, taxis, and ride-hailing services. The city's transport network connects well to major nearby cities like Shanghai and Nanjing, making it accessible from several regional airports.
Metro and Rail Networks
Suzhou has a metro system that serves as a convenient way to navigate the city. The metro connects major transport hubs and runs through the city center, making it an efficient choice for getting around. Metro Line 4 runs north–south through downtown and serves Suzhou Station. Metro Line 2 serves both Suzhou Station and Suzhou North Station. Metro Line 3 serves Suzhou Industrial Park Station and Suzhou New District Station. Both Suzhou metro line 11 and Shanghai metro line 11 go to Kunshan, so it is possible to travel between Shanghai and Suzhou by metro.
Four major train stations serve Suzhou with high-speed rail connections to surrounding cities. Suzhou Station, located north of downtown on the northern ring road, offers frequent high-speed trains to Shanghai (less than half an hour away), Wuxi, Changzhou, Zhenjiang, and Nanjing (about one hour away). Suzhou Industrial Park Station and Suzhou New District Station also serve the Shanghai-Nanjing mainline. Suzhou North Station handles high-speed trains from Beijing and other northern cities, with journey times to Beijing usually around 5 hours.
Train tickets can be purchased at railway station counters or ticket offices throughout the city. Foreigners must show a passport as identification. It is wise to book tickets a few days in advance, especially during public holidays, though fast trains can often be booked the same day. Tickets can also be booked through the China Rail website, though this typically requires a Chinese bank account. Travel agents and some hotels will arrange ticket purchases for a small fee.
Buses and Public Transport
City buses provide comprehensive coverage across Suzhou. Many bus routes depart from Suzhou Station, with services heading toward downtown areas like Guanqian Street and Ganjiang Lu (15–20 minutes travel time). Specific routes serve the Suzhou Industrial Park and other districts. Suzhou has three main bus stations, including the modern Suzhou South Gate Bus Station, which serves shuttle connections to Shanghai, Nanjing, Hangzhou, and other major destinations.
Buses also connect Suzhou to regional airports. Shuttle buses run regularly between Suzhou and both Shanghai airports, taking approximately one hour to Hongqiao Airport and around one hour and forty minutes to Pudong Airport. These services operate on predictable schedules with clear pricing.
Taxis and Ride-Hailing
Taxis are readily available throughout Suzhou, with taxi ranks located at major transport hubs such as train stations. It is safer to use official taxi ranks rather than informal touts near stations. E-bike taxis also operate informally near transport stations, with negotiable fares to central areas. Ride-hailing services are available as an alternative to traditional taxis.
Walkability
Suzhou's downtown areas are walkable, particularly the historic Old Town (Gusu District) with its canals, classical gardens, and cultural heritage sites. Walking from Suzhou Station to the city center takes 20–30 minutes; pedestrians can exit the station, head right, and use tunnels under the train tracks to reach the old part of town. Once across the river, landmarks like the North Temple Pagoda are visible to guide orientation.
Airport Access
Suzhou itself has no civilian airport, so visitors typically arrive through nearby regional airports. Shanghai's two airports are the most commonly used options. Pudong Airport (75 miles away) handles many international flights, while Hongqiao Airport (53 miles away) primarily serves domestic flights with some regional international service. Shuttle buses connect both airports to Suzhou, with departures on regular schedules.
Alternatively, Hongqiao Airport can be reached from Suzhou by high-speed train in less than half an hour—ensure your ticket specifies Hongqiao Railway Station, as some trains terminate at the original Shanghai Railway Station, which is far from the airport. From Hongqiao, the airport is about one kilometer away, accessible by one metro stop or a long but level indoor walk.
Wuxi Airport, located only a few kilometers from Suzhou, serves primarily domestic flights and is an option for travelers with connections in that city. Buses run between Wuxi Airport and city center (allowing about 40 minutes) and between Wuxi and Suzhou by high-speed train (about 15 minutes).
Hangzhou and Nanjing airports are also accessible alternatives, with bus services connecting Suzhou to Hangzhou Airport and frequent high-speed trains linking Suzhou to Nanjing (approximately one hour travel time).
