Getting to Nantong
Visitors can reach Nantong via several modes of transport, including air, rail, and road. Depending on your starting point, these options provide reliable connections into the city center.
- By Plane: The local Nantong airport (NTG) is located approximately 18 km from the city center; however, it serves a limited number of domestic flights. Because of its proximity to Shanghai, many travelers choose to fly into either Hongqiao Airport (SHA) or Pudong Airport. From these hubs, the drive to central Nantong takes roughly two hours via the expressway.
- By Train: There are two primary railway stations in the city: Nantong Railway Station and Nantong West Railway Station. Both stations offer frequent train services from Shanghai (approximately 1.5 hours) and regular trains from Nanjing (approximately 2.5 hours).
- By Car: The city is well-connected by several national expressways, including the G15 from the north and the G40 from the west. Additionally, the Sutong Bridge connects Nantong to Suzhou, while a highway from Shanghai utilizes the Yangtze River Tunnel and Bridge to reach the city via Chongming Island.
Navigating the City
Once in Nantong, there are several ways to move between districts and local landmarks. The city offers a mix of modern rail transit, traditional bus routes, and convenient taxi services.
- Rail Transit: The Nantong Rail Transit system provides a modern way to travel through the heart of the city. Line 1 runs in a northwest-southeast direction across the central urban area. A second line is also being developed to expand the network.
- Buses: Public buses ply the main streets throughout the city. While they are a standard mode of transport, travelers should note that bus travel can be slower than other methods due to local traffic conditions.
- Taxis: Taxis are available and considered an affordable way to navigate the city quickly if you need to reach a destination faster than the bus system allows.
