Dongtai is a coastal county-level city in Jiangsu province, administered by Yancheng. It sits on the Yellow Sea, borders Nantong to the south and Taizhou to the west, and is the southernmost county-level division of Yancheng. The urban core is compact, while the rest of the population is spread across the surrounding towns and rural areas, so plan on the city centre being your practical base.
How Visitors Get Around
Getting around Dongtai itself is straightforward. The most convenient options for a visitor are taxis, ride-hailing apps such as Didi, and local buses. The city is also described as safe for walking at any time of day, so short trips on foot are a realistic option.
Rail, Metro and Tram
Dongtai has no major railway station of its own, and there is no metro or tram network to speak of. The Xinchang Railway does traverse the downtown area, but for practical purposes you should treat rail as a way of reaching the wider region rather than a way of moving around the city. Rail access to the area is normally arranged via transfers at Yancheng or Nantong, both of which have modern stations with connections to local lines.
Buses and Other Public Transport
Local buses are one of the convenient ways to move around Dongtai. For arriving from elsewhere, intercity buses connect the city with neighbouring prefectures, including regular departures from Yancheng and Yangzhou. These buses arrive at the city's central bus station, which is conveniently located for onward transfers. Tickets can be bought at station ticket offices.
Taxis and Ride-Hailing
Taxis and ride-hailing apps are among the most convenient ways to get around the city. Taxis and pre-booked transfers are also available from Yangzhou, which is useful if you are travelling with bulky luggage. Two practical cautions: avoid illegal "black taxis" near stations, and either insist on the meter or agree on a fixed price before you set off.
Walkability
Dongtai is described as safe for walking at any time of day, and the urban core is where most visitors will spend their time. Walking works well for short hops, but for anything longer, taxis, ride-hailing or local buses will be quicker.
Getting There from the Airport
Dongtai has no airport of its own, so you will fly into a nearby city and continue overland. The nearest option is Yancheng (YNZ); Yangzhou (YTY) and Nantong (NTG) are also within reach. All of these require ground transport to cover the final leg into Dongtai.
From Yancheng, the expressway network allows a fairly quick drive, and intercity buses run regularly to Dongtai's central bus station. From Yangzhou, taxis and pre-booked transfers are a practical choice, especially with luggage, and intercity buses are also available. From Nantong, rail connections via the modern station there are the usual route into the area. Whichever airport you use, expect to combine a flight with a bus, train or car transfer rather than a single direct connection.
Practical Tips
- Currency is the yuan (CNY). Alipay or WeChat Pay are recommended; cash and foreign cards can be difficult to use.
- English is not widely spoken, so carry an offline translator and have your hotel address written in Chinese.
- The climate is humid subtropical: light clothing and an umbrella in summer, a windproof jacket in winter.
- Bottled water is recommended, and it is sensible to carry a basic first-aid kit.
- Local etiquette favours politeness and restraint; a nod or slight bow is enough as a greeting.
- If you have time, the coastal nature reserve known for rare migratory birds is a nearby attraction.
