Understanding Ji'an's Layout
Ji'an is a prefecture-level city in the central region of Jiangxi province, sitting beside the Luoxiao Mountains with the Gan River running through its middle. The built-up urban core is made up of two districts, Jizhou and Qingyuan, and this is where most visitors will spend their time. Beyond the city centre, the wider municipal region stretches out to include a county-level city and ten counties, so it helps to know which part of Ji'an you are heading to before you plan your transport.
Note that the name "Ji'an" is shared with another Chinese city in Jilin province, near the North Korean border. The guidance below concerns Ji'an in Jiangxi; if you are searching for tickets or bookings online, double-check that you have the right province.
Arriving by Rail
Ji'an is served by the Beijing–Kowloon Railway line, which passes through the municipality with train stations at Xingan, Xiajiang, Jishui, Ji'an (Ji'an Station), and Taihe. For most visitors, Ji'an Station is the practical arrival point, since it sits within the city itself. The other stations serve the surrounding counties and are useful mainly if your destination lies in those areas rather than in the urban core.
Buying tickets works the way it does across China's rail network: you can purchase at the station ticket office or through the official national rail booking channels. Because the stations along this line are spread across a large municipal area, confirm which station your train actually calls at before arranging onward transport — arriving at the wrong one can leave you a long way from the city centre.
Getting Around the City
Ji'an's public transport is modest in scale. There is no metro or tram network in the city, so visitors rely on a combination of buses, taxis, walking, and cycling.
Buses
The city has a limited number of bus routes, but they generally cover the train station, the city centre, and some of the major attractions. Buses are ordinary city services and run at relatively low frequency, so waiting times can be noticeably longer outside peak hours. If your itinerary is fairly fixed and you know which routes you need, the bus can work well as a supplementary way to get around — but it is not the most flexible option for spontaneous sightseeing.
Taxis
Taxis are plentiful and are one of the most convenient ways to get around Ji'an. Short trips within the city are common and prices are generally low. Taxis are particularly time-saving when you are heading to the train station, your hotel, or the city's scattered historical sites. For visitors who are unfamiliar with the routes, taking a taxi is more convenient than transferring between buses.
Walking
The city centre is suitable for walking, especially in residential areas and around some of the historical sites. Walking lets you experience the daily life of the city more directly and makes it easy to adjust your route on the fly. Given the humid subtropical climate — long, hot, humid summers and cool, drier winters — it is worth planning longer walks for the cooler parts of the day.
Cycling
The city's roads are relatively flat, and some sections are suitable for cycling. If you are staying for a longer period, renting or bringing your own bicycle is a comfortable way to explore the riverside. For attractions outside the city, however, it is still best to combine cycling with a taxi or other transport rather than relying on the bike alone.
Getting from the Airport into the City
Ji'an is served by Jinggangshan Airport, also known as Ji'an Airport, which is located in Taihe County under the jurisdiction of Ji'an City. The airport lies some distance from the city itself, so you should plan the onward leg of your journey in advance rather than assuming you can simply walk out and find a taxi queue.
Because the airport sits out in Taihe County rather than in the urban core, the practical approach is to arrange ground transport for the transfer into Ji'an before you arrive — either by asking your hotel to help arrange a pickup or by confirming locally what taxi and shuttle options are operating. Allow generous time for the transfer, and treat the airport-to-city leg as a separate, planned stage of your trip rather than an afterthought.
Practical Tips
- Confirm which rail station your train serves — Ji'an Station is in the city, while the other stations on the Beijing–Kowloon line serve outlying counties.
- Build in extra waiting time if you plan to rely on buses, especially outside peak hours.
- Keep taxis in mind for reaching the train station, hotels, and scattered historical sites; they are plentiful and inexpensive for short trips.
- Base yourself in the Jizhou or Qingyuan districts if you want to walk and cycle to the main sights.
- Plan your airport transfer in advance, since Jinggangshan Airport is located out in Taihe County rather than in the city.
