Navigating Wenzhou as a visitor involves a variety of transportation options, ranging from extensive public transit networks to convenient private transport. Depending on your starting point and destination, you can choose between rail, metro, bus, taxi, or ferry services.
Getting to the City
If you are arriving by air at Wenzhou Longwan International Airport (WNZ), located east of the city, you have two primary ways to reach the city center:
- Bus: A dedicated bus service operates from a ticket desk in the new terminal. This route travels through New City and Xialüpu before ending at a depot on Nanpu Road. The fare is approximately ¥12.
- Taxi: Taxis are available at the airport. While convenient, they are more expensive than the bus; a price under ¥100 for this trip is generally considered a good deal.
If arriving by train, there are two main stations to note:
- Wenzhou Railway Station: Serves most cities across China and is located at the junction of Wenzhou Avenue and Chezhan Avenue.
- Wenzhou South Railway Station: This station serves high-speed trains connecting to major hubs like Shanghai, Fuzhou, and Xiamen.
Public Transit Networks
The city features a functional metro system and an extensive bus network that can move you between key landmarks and transit hubs.
- Metro: The Wenzhou Metro (WZ-MTR) is useful for travelers, particularly Line S1, which connects the two main train stations, the city center, and the airport. A second line, S2, also serves the region.
- Bus: City buses are an affordable way to travel, typically costing between ¥1.5 and ¥2.5. Many routes are useful for connecting major hubs; for example, the 81 bus connects the old train station with the new south train station. Bus stops feature signs that list the route's stops on one side and a map on the other.
Taxis and Ride-Hailing
Taxis are a common way to get around, but there are specific local practices to keep in mind regarding pricing and availability:
- Pricing: Standard rates start at ¥11 for the first 4 km (increasing to ¥12 plus a gas charge after 11:30 PM) with incremental charges for additional distance.
- Driver Shifts: Between 4:30 PM and 6:00 PM, it can be difficult to find a taxi in or near the city center due to driver shift changes.
- Shared Rides: During rush hour or for long-distance trips, you may share a taxi with other passengers heading toward the same area of the city.
- Negotiation: It is advisable to negotiate prices beforehand if it is raining or during peak hours, and ensure drivers are using the meter rather than "off the meter" pricing.
Water Transport
For specific destinations along the Ouhai River, ferries are available. These serve various locations, including the suburb of Oubei and the tourist island of Jiangxin.
