Traveling from the Airport
Shaoxing does not have its own civil aviation airport. Travelers arriving by air typically use nearby regional airports to reach the city. The most common options include:
- Hangzhou Xiaoshan International Airport: Located approximately 30 km west of Shaoxing, this is the nearest major international hub. You can reach the city via shuttle buses, taxis, or private transfers.
- Ningbo Lishe International Airport: Located about 120 km southeast of the city, accessible by intercity buses and private transportation.
- Yiwu Airport: A smaller regional airport located roughly 100 km southwest of Shaoxing, reachable via taxis or intercity buses.
Rail and Transit Hubs
The rail network serves as a primary way to reach the city from other regions. Several stations serve the area, most of which are equipped with clear signage despite limited English-speaking staff.
- Shaoxingbei Railway Station: The main hub for high-speed trains, located about 10 km north of the city center.
- Shaoxing Railway Station: A central hub for both standard and high-speed trains, located roughly 5 km southeast of the city center.
- Shaoxingdong Railway Station: A key high-speed rail stop situated about 15 km east of the city center.
- Regional Stations: Other nearby stations include Shangyu (approx. 5 km from its district center), Shangyunan, Zhuji, Shengzhou North, and Shengzhou Xinchang. These serve various parts of the prefecture and surrounding areas.
Buses and Local Transport
Buses are a reliable and affordable way to navigate both the city and the surrounding region. While high-speed rail is often preferred for long distances, buses are practical for reaching smaller towns or rural areas where rail access may be limited.
- Inter-city Travel: Major hubs like Shaoxing Central Bus Station (near the city center), Shangyu Bus Station, and Zhuji Bus Station provide routes to major cities such as Hangzhou, Ningbo, and Jinhua.
- Local Transit: The local bus network covers most major attractions and neighborhoods throughout the city.
Taxis, Ride-Hailing, and Shared Bikes
For more direct travel, visitors can utilize ride-hailing services or traditional taxis. Because many taxi drivers may not speak English, it is highly recommended to have your destination written in Chinese or use a translation app.
- Ride-Hailing: Apps like DiDi are commonly used for quick and efficient transport. Payments can be made seamlessly through Alipay or WeChat.
- Shared Bikes: These are widely available near bus stops and popular tourist sites, making them an excellent option for short-distance trips.
Walkability and Safety
The downtown area is well-maintained and pleasant for walking, offering a blend of modern and ancient atmosphere. However, pedestrians should exercise caution when crossing streets.
- Pedestrian Safety: Vehicles may not always yield at zebra crossings. It is safest to cross only when the pedestrian light is green. When navigating busy streets, it can be helpful to cross alongside a group of locals to ensure vehicles slow down or stop.
Driving in Shaoxing
While car rentals are available for visitors, you must hold a valid Chinese driving license, as international permits are not accepted in mainland China. Note that some areas in the downtown district may have restrictions on motorcycle use on major roads to manage traffic flow.
