Getting Around Huaibei

Huaibei is a prefecture-level city in northern Anhui Province, sitting at the junction of Anhui, Jiangsu, and Henan. It is not a large city by Chinese standards, and its built-up area is compact enough that public buses, taxis, and shared bikes will cover most of what a visitor wants to see. The sections below explain which modes exist, roughly how they work, and how to pay for them.

Arriving by Train

Rail is the main way visitors reach Huaibei from other parts of China. The city has a main railway station, Huaibei Station, and the rail network links the city to major national lines: the Beijing–Shanghai Railway to the east, the Urumqi–Lianyungang Railway to the north, and the Beijing–Kowloon Railway to the west.

The Huaibei–Suzhou–Bengbu Intercity Railway runs through northern Anhui and connects Huaibei with Suzhou and Bengbu. It begins at Huaibei North Station on the Huaibei–Xiaoxian link line and stops at Huaibei West Station, Suzhou West Station, Shuangduiji Station, and Guzhen South Station before ending at Bengbu South Station. Huaibei North Station and Bengbu South Station are existing stations rather than new builds.

High-speed services connect Huaibei directly with major cities. Trains run from Beijing South Station to Huaibei Station, and there is also a service from Shanghai (departing Songjiang Station) to Huaibei Station. If you are arriving by high-speed rail, expect to arrive at Huaibei Station or one of the other stations on the intercity line, and plan your onward transfer from there.

Buses

For a first-time visitor, the bus is described as a convenient way to get around. Fares are low, and a transportation card makes travel cheaper and more convenient than paying cash. Students and seniors receive additional discounts, and if you transfer to another bus within about forty minutes of swiping your card, you do not pay again.

Because Huaibei is not a large city, the public bus network reaches the city center, the train station, the new urban area, hospitals, and universities. There are also dedicated "health special lines" that make access to hospitals easier.

You can pay by scanning a QR code with WeChat Pay or Alipay, or with cash. If you pay cash, exact change is usually required, since drivers typically do not give change. Bus displays and announcements are usually not in English and route information is primarily in Chinese, so a translation app or help from a local is useful. Hotel staff and younger passengers are generally willing to assist.

Taxis and Ride-Hailing

Taxis are a convenient option for short trips around the city, as in many Chinese cities. You can usually hail one on the street, or book through mobile ride-hailing apps such as Didi or Gaode. The starting fare is modest and covers a short initial distance; beyond that, the fare is calculated per kilometre. Waiting fees may apply when the vehicle is moving slowly or stuck in congested traffic, and nighttime rides may cost slightly more than daytime rides because of a nighttime surcharge.

Bicycles

Huaibei offers a public bicycle rental service similar to the bike-sharing systems found in larger cities. You simply scan a QR code to rent a bike. You can park anywhere you like, and you can use your phone to check nearby stations and available bikes. This is a practical option for short hops within the city center.

Walkability

Huaibei's built-up area is compact, and the city is not a sprawling metropolis, so walking is realistic for short trips between nearby destinations. For anything longer, the bus, a taxi, or a shared bike will usually be quicker. Note that signage and route information are primarily in Chinese, so having a translation app on hand helps when navigating on foot.

Getting In from the Airport

Huaibei does not have its own commercial airport serving the city directly. The nearest major airport is Xuzhou Guanyin International Airport, which lies roughly 90 kilometres away, in neighbouring Jiangsu Province. Because the airport is in another province, you should plan the onward leg into Huaibei in advance — typically by long-distance bus, high-speed rail from Xuzhou, or a pre-arranged car or taxi. Once you reach Huaibei Station or another station on the intercity line, you can continue into the city by bus, taxi, or ride-hailing.
