Getting Around Foumban
Foumban is a compact city in Cameroon's Western region, lying north-east of Bafoussam, and it is best known as the major town of the Bamoun people and the home of the Foumban Royal Palace and its museum. Because the city's main attractions cluster around the palace and the museum quarter, most visitors find that getting around on foot covers the essentials, with taxis filling in the gaps for longer hops or when you are carrying luggage.
On Foot
Walking is the most practical way to explore the heart of Foumban. The city's jewel, the Palais Royal, sits at the centre of the city, and its centrality has long symbolised the way the ruler stood at the nerve centre of the community. A few hundred metres south of the palace is the Musée des Arts et des Traditions Bamoun, and the road connecting the two museums is the Rue des Artisans, lined with sculptors, basket makers, weavers and embroiderers.
- The palace and the Musée des Arts et des Traditions Bamoun are within easy walking distance of each other, linked by the Rue des Artisans.
- The Rue des Artisans is one of the best places in Central Africa to buy wood carvings, so allow time to stroll and browse.
- The art market, the tourist centre and the museum are all part of the same central cluster of attractions.
Rail, Metro and Tram
Visitors should plan on road-based transport for both arriving in Foumban and moving around it.
Buses and Other Public Transport
Foumban is reached by road, and long-distance bus services form the backbone of intercity travel in the region. Note that there is no direct bus connection between Yaoundé and Foumban; journeys from the capital require a transfer.
- A common routing is a bus from Yaoundé to Bameda, followed by a taxi onward to Foumban. The bus leg is operated by Oasis Travels (tel +237 698 393 115, oasistravel.cm).
- Because the trip involves a change of vehicle, build in buffer time and confirm connections locally before you set out.
Taxis and Ride-Hailing
Taxis are the main alternative to walking for getting around and for completing the final leg into Foumban. On the Yaoundé route, taxi operators listed for the Bameda–Foumban leg include Limo (limo.cm) and Nayo (nayo.cm).
- Taxis can be used both for the connecting leg into Foumban and for direct long-distance travel from Yaoundé.
- Driving yourself is another option if you have a vehicle; the road route from Yaoundé to Foumban is the cheapest way to make the trip.
- Fares vary widely depending on the operator and the leg, so agree on the price before you set off.
Getting from the Airport into the City
In practice, visitors approach Foumban overland. From Yaoundé, the journey requires a transfer: a bus to Bameda followed by a taxi to Foumban, or a direct taxi, or your own car. Because accommodation in Foumban is limited, it is worth sorting out where you will stay before you arrive.
Practical Tips
- Base yourself centrally so the palace, the museums and the Rue des Artisans are all walkable.
- Bring cash for the art market and craft centre, where wood carvings and other handmade goods are the main draw.
- Confirm bus and taxi connections in advance, since the Yaoundé route involves a change of vehicle at Bameda.
- Allow generous time for overland travel, and treat the journey as part of the trip rather than a quick transfer.
