Getting Around Mogi das Cruzes
Mogi das Cruzes is a mid-sized municipality in the São Paulo metropolitan region, and it has a decent public transportation service that will get you to most places you're likely to visit. The city is sprawling and includes rural areas, so the mode you choose depends on whether you're staying in the urban core or heading out toward the districts and countryside.
By Train
The backbone of public transport into and across the city is the CPTM train line 11 (Coral). It runs from São Paulo and stops at four stations within Mogi das Cruzes, so you can use it both to arrive from the capital and to move between neighbourhoods.
- Jundiapeba Station – serves the Jundiapeba neighbourhood, a simple area with some remaining train-worker houses from the 19th century. Note that public security around this station is not as good as in other parts of town.
- Braz Cubas Station – in a simple residential district, close to Leon Feffer Park.
- Mogi das Cruzes Station – the downtown station, on Praça Sacadura Cabral in the Centro. From here you can walk to the Municipal Market, most downtown shops, Asian product shops, the Catedral de Sant'Ana, Carmo Church, and Theatro Vasques.
- Estudantes Station – the last station on the line. It sits between two private universities and is close to the shopping mall. This is the key interchange: you can transfer here to the Estudantes bus terminal for city buses, intercity buses to neighbouring towns, and long-distance buses to Guararema, Jacareí, Aparecida, and Bertioga.
By Bus
Buses are the main way to get around the city itself, and most places can be reached this way. During the week, buses around downtown generally run at 10–20 minute intervals. On weekends, frequencies drop significantly — even in rural areas you may wait at least 90 minutes. Most lines operate between roughly 05:00 and 23:00, so it's worth consulting the bus schedule before you set out.
There are two main bus terminals:
- Terminal Central – the central bus terminal for city buses. Buses from the Sabaúna district and from the Serra do Mar (the coastal mountain range, near the borders with Bertioga) arrive and depart here.
- Terminal Estudantes – located by the long-distance and intercity bus terminals, and at the last station of the CPTM Coral line. Buses from urban neighbourhoods and rural areas serve this terminal, including services to areas with trekking trails, waterfalls, and the Casarão do Chá (an old tea factory). A circular bus connects it to the central terminal.
By Car
If you're driving, several state highways serve the municipality: SP-66, SP-70, SP-88, and SP-98. Given how spread out the city is and how limited weekend bus service can be, a car is useful for reaching rural districts and outlying attractions.
Walking
Walking works well in the downtown core. From Mogi das Cruzes Station you can reach the Municipal Market, the main shopping streets, the cathedral, Carmo Church, and Theatro Vasques on foot. Beyond the centre, the city is sprawling and includes rural areas, so walking is not a practical way to cover the whole municipality.
Getting There from the Airport
