Getting oriented
Jaraguá do Sul sits in the north of Santa Catarina state, Brazil, and its compact downtown is the hub of local transport. The city's urban bus terminal is on Getúlio Vargas Avenue in the downtown area, which makes it the natural starting point for most journeys around town.
Rail, metro and trams
Jaraguá do Sul has no rail, metro or tram network for visitors to use. Getting around the city and reaching it from elsewhere is done by road — on foot, by bus, by taxi or by car.
Buses and public transport
The city's municipal transport system is a non-integrated one, currently operated by Viação Canarinho. In practice, that means you should not expect a single ticket to cover a change of buses across the network; plan each leg of your trip separately and confirm fares and connections locally.
For travel beyond the city, Jaraguá do Sul has an intermunicipal bus station in the Vila Baependi neighbourhood, in operation since 1992. It is the place to head for longer-distance coaches, and it also houses other institutions and services, including the Instituto de Meio Ambiente de Santa Catarina (IMA), the Association of Councilors of the Itapocu Valley, the Rã Bugio Institute and the Centro de Valorização da Vida (CVV).
A number of coach companies serve the terminal, among them Auto Viação Catarinense, Reunidas S.A. Transportes Coletivos, Empresa União de Transportes, Viação Nossa Senhora dos Navegantes, Empresa União Cascavel de Transporte e Turismo Ltda., Viação Itapemirim S.A., Brasil Sul Linhas Rodoviárias, Expresso São Bento, Auto Viação Venâncio Aires, Empresa de Ônibus Nossa Senhora da Penha and Viação Canarinho.
- Buying tickets: for intercity routes, tickets can be booked online through platforms such as Omio, or directly with the operator — for example, Auto Viação Catarinense sells schedules and bookings through its own website and offers phone and email contact for customer service.
- Sample route: there is direct bus service between Florianópolis and Jaraguá do Sul with no transfers required. Auto Viação Catarinense is the primary operator, and Viação Nordeste also runs the route once daily. Buses depart from the Terminal Rodoviário Rita Maria in Florianópolis and arrive at the Terminal Rodoviário de Jaraguá do Sul, running daily at roughly four-hour intervals, with a journey time of about four and a half hours.
Taxis and ride-hailing
The source material for this guide does not describe taxi ranks or ride-hailing apps operating in Jaraguá do Sul, so no specific recommendations can be made here. As in most Brazilian cities of its size, taxis and app-based rides are generally arranged locally — ask at your hotel or at the bus terminal for the options available on the day.
Walking
The downtown area, centred on Getúlio Vargas Avenue and the urban terminal, is the most practical part of the city to explore on foot, since that is where local buses converge and where central services are found. Beyond the centre, the city spreads out, so walking is best treated as a way to cover the immediate downtown rather than as a means of crossing the whole city.
Getting in from the airport
Jaraguá do Sul has a municipal aerodrome (ICAO: SIH4), but it is used for private or business flights rather than commercial ones. Visitors arriving by air for commercial service therefore use one of two neighbouring airports:
- Joinville Airport — located about 50 km from the city, and the closer of the two for commercial flights.
- Navegantes International Airport — the alternative used by residents for commercial flights.
From either airport, the onward journey to Jaraguá do Sul is by road. The city is reached via three highways: BR-280, which links to other regions of Santa Catarina and to the neighbouring state of Paraná; SC-110, which connects to the nearby towns of Pomerode and Rio dos Cedros; and SC-108, which runs to Joinville and Blumenau. Since Joinville Airport lies in the direction of SC-108, that route is the relevant corridor for arrivals from there.
Practical tips
- Use the downtown urban terminal on Getúlio Vargas Avenue as your reference point for local buses.
- Remember that the municipal system is non-integrated: buy each leg of your journey separately and check connections before you set out.
- For coaches to other cities, go to the intermunicipal bus station in Vila Baependi and book ahead with the operator or online.
- If you are flying in commercially, plan your ground transfer from Joinville Airport or Navegantes International Airport rather than from the city's own aerodrome.
