Getting Around Balneário Camboriú
Balneário Camboriú is a compact, high-rise coastal city built on steep hills that drop down to the sea. Its best-known stretch, Avenida Atlântica, runs along the oceanfront and is the natural spine of a visit. Because the city is dense and its main sights cluster near the beach and the river mouth, getting around is mostly a matter of choosing between walking, buses, taxis and ride-hailing apps.
Rail, Metro and Tram
Balneário Camboriú has no rail, metro or tram network, so visitors should not expect to arrive or move around by train. The city's public transport is road-based, and the cable car over the beach is a sightseeing attraction rather than a transit line.
Buses and Public Transport
Buses are the main form of public transport in the city, and they are also an option for reaching Balneário Camboriú from the nearest airport. Intercity bus services connect the city with other destinations, and there is no shortage of bus options for getting into town. For travel within the city, buses serve as the everyday public transport mode alongside taxis and app-based rides.
Taxis and Ride-Hailing
Taxis are widely available and are a practical choice for short trips, including the transfer from the airport — the fare is described as not costing that much. Ride-hailing apps are another convenient way to move around, particularly for the hilly stretches and for reaching beaches away from the centre. For visitors basing themselves along Avenida Atlântica, taxis and app rides are the simplest way to cover longer hops without worrying about parking.
Walking
Walking works well in the central beach area. Avenida Atlântica is the city's main ocean boulevard and the focus of most visitor activity, so much of what a tourist wants — the beachfront, the central beach, and the lower end of the cable car — is reachable on foot. The city is built on steep hills, however, so routes away from the seafront involve climbs, and the southern beaches such as Bamboos, Estaleiro, Estaleirinho and Pinho are linked by the Interpraias road rather than by a walkable promenade.
Getting There from the Airport
The nearest airport is Ministro Victor Konder International Airport, located in the adjoining municipality of Navegantes. It has direct flights to and from São Paulo, Campinas, Ribeirão Preto, Rio de Janeiro, Belo Horizonte, Porto Alegre and Florianópolis, operated by LATAM, GOL and Azul. From the airport you can reach Balneário Camboriú by bus, or by taxi, which is described as not costing that much. Renting a car is another option; Localiza is the largest Brazilian rent-a-car company, and adding a GPS is worth considering because road signage in Brazil is not always good.
As an alternative, Florianópolis International Airport lies to the south and offers more route options, including Rio de Janeiro and Porto Alegre. If you are driving yourself, the route into Balneário Camboriú runs along the BR-101; pay attention to the signs, as you will usually need to head south. Note that access to the city is restricted to this main state road, and tourist traffic causes large jams in all directions for much of the year, so allow extra time on arrival and departure days.
Practical Tips
- Base yourself near Avenida Atlântica if you want to walk to the beach, the central beach and the cable car.
- Use taxis or ride-hailing for hilly routes and for the southern beaches along the Interpraias road.
- Buses are the budget option both for getting into the city and for local trips.
- If you rent a car, add a GPS — signage can be sparse.
- Expect heavy traffic on the BR-101 during peak tourist periods.
